Avery missed a substantial portion of the season with an Achilles injury and didn't have as much time as Smart did to defend his spot in the first all-defense team. Moreover, Smart, who was already a great defender, improved significantly this season on that side of the ball and made some big, game-changing plays for the Cs this season. And he can legit defend the 1-4.
