Spoelstra benches Whiteside in Heat loss at Washington
It was a wild night for the Heat as they went from trailing by 35 to playing for the win in the final seconds, but Hassan Whiteside was barely part of it.
Whiteside played just 20 minutes and sulked on the bench for much of
Miami’s 99-97 loss to the Wizards tonight at Verizon Center.
What exactly happened is unknown, other than Whiteside not producing anywhere near his usual output and some bad body language on the bench.
Spoelstra pulled him in the first quarter after he had two points and no rebounds in seven minutes, and the two had a brief conversation on the sideline. Whiteside walked away from it looking upset, but Spoelstra sent him back in early in the second quarter.
Whiteside started the third quarter before Spoelstra pulled him for Chris Andersen at the 7:35 mark and never went back to him. One reason for Whiteside sitting: The Heat went on a 33-7 run shortly after he exited.
[The only other
known issue between Whiteside and Spoelstra was in January about playing time, when Spoelstra said he made a mistake by not playing Whiteside more.]
Here is a look at what Spoelstra and Whiteside said afterward:
SPOELSTRA
Why did Whiteside play so little?
“Basically the guys out there earned those minutes. It’s not anything more than that, and I’m not going to make it anything bigger than that. The game was turning with those guys out there, so we kept them in there.”
Is there a problem with Whiteside’s attitude?
“He’ll be fine. He understands what our culture is. That exchange is a head coach talking to his player and coaching his player. We have an opportunity now to get the heck out of here and prepare for a big game tomorrow.”
There are character issues arising with Whiteside lately (referencing his ejection Monday and technical fouls in each of the last three games).
“I don’t know. How dramatic can you be right now?”
He was pouting on the bench.
“You’re looking way too much into that instead of the game that was going on. He was very good in the last game and he has an opportunity to get after it again tomorrow.”
WHITESIDE
What did the coaching staff tell you about not playing late?
“They didn’t say nothing to me.”
What was your conversation with Spoelstra in the first quarter?
“It was just regular coach stuff. It wasn’t an incident or anything. It was him just talking about a play or something.”
A lot of guys were cheering at the end, but you weren’t.
“I was cheering. I don’t know what you want me to do, dance? But we’re down. I’m gonna cheer as much as I can.”
Were you upset about your play?
“I played the way I always play. They wasn’t missing any shots when I was in, so there wasn’t much to rebound. I was playing like I normally play.”
