I remember he felt some type of way about that track Nas did on Street's disciple, plus surpassing him as well :mjpls:

The latter is clearly the reason for the former....

Ra is lowry's status when it comes to Nas...I suspect he feels he should have had the career Nas did, and he's tight as fukk about it.

wait, what? only LL sold more units in the 80s than Rakim did, and he came back with no notice in 97 and went gold like it was nothing. Rakim's had a very illustrious career

That's the line I always thought was a little shot at Rakim.

I'm an old school cat and was around when Ra first came out. His name has been held in the highest regard ever since. BUT...way back then, late 80's or very early 90's, there was a rumor going around that there was a proposal for rap battles. And among the battles it was supposed to be Rakim v. Kane. Winner was supposed to take like $50K. But it was never really confirmed back then. Trust, we were hoping for it, but it never came about. It wasnt until this year that I saw an interview with Kane and he was asked about it. He confirmed it. Said there was a dude trying to make it a big event and he reached out to both of them. Kane ran into Eric B. and was like your man gonna do this or what? Said he didnt really know Ra then so he talked to Eric. Eric was like yeah I'm gonna talk to him. Next time he saw him, Eric was like "nah, he aint wit it".

Now Rakim is the GOD MC. But...had this been more known to the public back then, his legacy may have been a little tarnished. Turning down a battle for all to see against Kane? After you ate up 21 MC's at the same time? Are you sca...nah, I can't even type that.

Add on the fact that Ra originally had a lil diss for Kane on Let the Rhythm Hit Em and then went back and took it out? Sheeeeetttt...I could so hear Kane on some "So you disrespected the Kane on your track? Nyqqa you better had retracted that!"

All of what you say doesnt preclude Rakim from being jealous of Nas.

When Nas was emerging, he was favorably compared to Ra with the commentary almost reading like: "Hey everyone, there is a younger, more gifted, more talented, and better looking version of Rakim named Nas. Check him out!". Rakim had to feel some type of way...Its human nature.

Ra has a career to be proud of, but Nas has had eight of his albums go platinum and he's still very relevant today with high profile guest appearances, commercials, lucrative concert tours, and overall in the eyes of critics and fans is generally recognized as the best to ever do it. Im sure he looks at Nas and thinks that's the career he should have had and deserved. Just by virtue of being a competitor at the very least.

Jay was never compared to Ra because they were two different animals as MC's and people, but Nas was (a cerebral poet; lets his music speak for itself) and subjectively (better rapper) and objectively (far wealthier) he surpassed him. Reading between the lines on why he's been reluctant to embrace Nas over all these years...welp, like a certain someone said: 'It aint hard to tell'.

The 36 Chambers
Rakim was mad that Nas mentioned & didn't ask that him if he can mention his seeds on a 'UNAUTHORIZED biography of Rakim' joint.

Homie still bitter :mjlol:

its possible, theres no question Nas had a way more solid and filled out run. Ra dipped out, came back, but hasnt done much to push forward these past 12-15 years

i dont think Nas is more gifted personally, and hes my GOAT. Ra was producing his hits AND rapping like no one else until years later. he was the first rap prodigy and got scammed out of producer credits for classics
