Starboy” finds The Weeknd suffocating and killing his old self for this new era while bopping around like he’s Michael Jackson’s heir apparent"

I honestly tried to avoid drawing more impulsive / unfounded comparisons to Michael Jackson when it comes to The Weeknd's Starboy, but the more I kept listening, watching & reading numerous reviews it had become 'apparent' that both the song & video are inspired by The King of Pop. Here are some excerpts from various online outlets ...

Quote
The Weeknd's vocals still show the influence of his hero, Michael Jackson, with the "black pants" "puma loafers" and falsetto. The complex lyrics tell a tale of how fame isn't all it's made out to be

Quote
The chorus, it’s almost as if we were listening to a Disclosure remix of Michael Jackson’s Ghosts. This is probably a result of the infinite sessions that Daft Punk had with Nile Rogers-who worked with Michael during this era- and is also likely to be responsible for the robot-esque sound effect on Tesfaye’s voice. In a matter of seconds, The Weeknd manages to go from a shy little boy in the playground saying “look what you’ve done”, to the sexiest man in music uttering “I’m a mother ****ing starboy”.

Quote
He kills his old self, identified by his hair, and then appears with his newly-cropped look and a Michael JacksonBad” attitude

Quote
It’s hard not to get a “Bad” or “Dangerous” feel from the “Starboy” video: the singer rocks a Black leather jacket
and tightens his black leather gloves as he walks down the hallways; and he destroys, with almost gleeful abandon,
all of his past awards and signs of his “old” self in his apartment.

"Starboy" evokes unambiguously the sound of Michael Jackson Bad in 1986, a kind of simple but anguished fusion of Pop, Funk, R&B and electro

Quote
The Weeknd’s new personality as a mashup between Michael Jackson and Bruce Wayne is only getting started

It’s hard not to get Michael Jackson feels from this but it’s clear that The Weeknd is now entering a new era of stardom — complete with dance moves and all

"Starboy" gets a nice understated beat with a woolly bass and vocoders which winks to 1985. Smooth Criminal stuff.

Quote
The best was provided by the techno duo of Daft Punk and match his showy vocals very well. It almost remind me of Michael Jackson's You Rock My World in that it had a lot of power in the beat and vocals.

Guess what ... yep!. Fits like a "glove" haha!

The Weeknd’s musical style has long been compared to that of Michael Jackson, but here he takes it even further aesthetically:

This bleak focus on celebrity and transformation, and with the ominous large cat to boot, seems clearly drawn from the King of Pop

So there you have it kids, Starboy is another monster hit single wrapped up in the Michael Jackson-esque pop gloss formula but this time more smooth with a clean rhythmic dance inspired beat and a subtle dark undertone.

What I love about the whole shyt is that he KNOWS he can't dance :laff:

Like he be laughing in his head when he's doing the spins and shyt because on one hand he's trolling and on the other truly inspired, I love it personally.

Prince ends Sign o’ the Times with “The Cross,” a powerfully direct expression of his Christian faith that implores listeners and fans and acolytes and worshippers (of both Prince and Jesus) not to die without knowing Jesus’ salvation. It’s a song with one eye on a corrupt materialistic world full of sin and the other on the promise of Jesus’ return, and with it the redemption of all mankind.

One of the greatest double albums of the vinyl era, Sign O' the Times shows Prince at his peak. I know [Matos] well enough to know that he holds Sign O' the Times in the same esteem as I, but I don't know him well enough to have prepared me for the shock of recognition that came from the first of the four 'sides' his Sign book is divided into.
