He goes into foreign a bar, starts singing close to how he normally sings and these foreign (read: not his fanbase) consumers at the bar don't react too well. Then he poppifies when the Devil (or whoever that is) puts him on fire and the beat goes full pop.

That's all there is to understanding the video really. It's his manifesto on how he's going to start making shyt that'll make people that wouldn't fukk with him vibe to his new shyt.

Agreed, The Weeknd actually cut his path to MJ greatness when he got into making loft self-centered music. MJ had wide-range music which is difficult to sell and requires a sturdy catalogue to pull off.

You can't just drop an Earth Song if you don't got the resume for it no matter how good it sounds, and The Weeknd has a resume that's counter-world songs which is what MJ is worldwide loved for.

MJ wasn't just talent, he was a citizen of the world willing to empathize with the plights of people far away AKA he embraced the world and the world embraced him. That's the most difficult task to accomplish when you're an artist.
That's also why there's only one 2pac song in the Vatican (Changes), which happens to be a song for all people of all races and places.

Not sure why this is even thread worthy when Michael Jackson is one of the all time most influential entertainers. Every solo pop or R&B artist was influenced by him in some way.
