This is how i remember it. The dj was still the star. This is why Curtis Blow and Reverand Run were aligning themselves with being DJs. Melle Mels dj had the bigger name.

LL had a dj(cut creator) who didn't outshine LL. LL came in the game as a rapper not a dj. Once they saw LL didn't even need a dj on stage he created the standard. Notice Rakim and Krs came in the game aligned with a dj all after LL made the standard.

LL became the solo rapper prototype. LL was the first rap superstar not aligned with a group and was bigger than his dj. LL changed the game at 16 years old.
