One of my friends on FB who's 10-11 years older than me posted this and it made me 
Midnight Marauders was my first proper introduction to A Tribe Called Quest. This was during hip hop's "golden age," the time of Nas' Illmatic, Yo! Mtv Raps, Rap City on BET, and just before it became something stolen by the industry and pimped for dollars. It was a great time to be a fan.
I remember that album cover. Everyone was on it from Ice-T to Busta, Too $hort to Chuck D. All with headphones on. All united by one sound.
I learned a lot from hip hop about Blue Note, J...ames Brown, Bob Marley, Funkadelic, Malcolm X, Africa, God. Now all I hear is pills and twerking. I know there's more happening, but I've lost any interest in really digging for gems. Kendrick is interesting, but few others are. Too much auto tune. Too much lean.
Anyway, Phife Dawg is gone. Certainly we belong to God, and certainly to Him we return. I really appreciate that time, that sound, that energy. I miss it. I miss the authenticity and brilliance of hip hop. I miss it's rebelliousness, it's striving to be unique. I miss its connection to the past, from The Last Poets to John Coltrane. I miss learning something, having my mind blown by creative wordplay and inventive sounds. I miss feeling connected to so much art and history and experience. I read a lot of books just because of the rappers who used to brag about the exotic things they knew.
