I see in that word usage, the micro definitions, and narrower and narrower categories, an increasingly intolerant people using them.
As much as I think (mutual) clarity is important, god knows, I try to convey that just asking someone to dinner at somewhere "upscale" does NOT to me imply any sort of trade of or expectation, or "class" of person/date.
I also think in that hyper categorization, things just get murkier and murkier. It's like emoji's. I think collectively opening up to people, experiences, is what makes things easier, lowering and letting go of expectations. I swear some of this is just content for listicles and social media posts.
"it's not a date, IF _____ _____"
"I don't go on dates, unless _______"
