Quick Version:
Big win. Melo's legs look like they're coming back to the point where he's attacking the rack more effectively, KP and Afflalo are the scoring help Melo needs, D-Will seems to have turned a corner, RoLo is locked in aka full psychopath mode and Fisher has tightened the rotation and started to utilize TO's more effectively. There is still a bit of worry with the close out play, but there wasn't the all out collapse this time and these guys actually held on tight. Dare I say, the team chemistry is hitting a stride we haven't yet seen (combination of system experience and guys looking comfortable in their roles). This was a statement win, period. Beat a playoff team in back to back games where we thoroughly outplayed them; blew them out once and held on to a tight one once; and matched last season's win total with dozens of games to go this year. Great start to the year!
Melo: This playmaking, triple threat Melo that we're seeing will be borderline unstoppable if his jumper gets its consistency back. He's been flirting with triple doubles lately because his passing has gone next level. Melo took advantage of cutters, used dribbling attacks to open up others and shot enough that the Hawks could never get a defensive balance. He still has to work on the TO's a bit, but with that much effectiveness it's not worth harping on. He could improve his efficiency but the takes he's getting are mostly good. The real focus needs to be on a guy who is playing high level defense, rebounding at an elite level for an SF and passing better than most Guards.
KP: Cue Juelz Rumble Young Man Rumble while this giant Euro backs Kent Bazemore down like he's staring down a child. KP started the game with two putbacks that set the tone for him. Milsap tried to go at him and picked up fouls and TO's. Horford overpowered him a bit late but other than that KP was a defensive presence. His 17 points were efficient (7-12), his 11 rebounds were strong against a physical team and even that one assist he got was a beauty. I really love that he's back to attacking inside more often, the three point stroke will come but if he's getting inside the points and efficiency will be there regardless.
AA: Melo and KP probably stole the spotlight in this one because of Melo's overall game and KP's face off with a vet...but this guy put up 23, 7 and 4 while keeping Korver in his slump. He punked Ashton all night with an array of post attacks and any time a defender cheated off him, AA was gonna make them pay. This dude's chemistry with the team is so good he even makes Rebecca Harlowe look better (seriously, she's overrated as hell...Lance Thomas of sideline reporters in NY right now). He's outplaying his contract, when he scores 15 or more we win period. If he can be the true second option, it affords KP growing pains and opens things up for everybody else. I'm pretty optimistic that he can be. My only fear is his opt-out clause.
RoLo: He's been a low key terror against the Hawks every time they play us. He's too big for Horford and too much of a presence for the slashing guards. 9,8 and 2 blocks while still doing more than his stat-line shows. The Hawks wanted to get physical with everyone and RoLo really set a tone by scaring the hell out of Milsap when Milsap threw some cheap crap at him. This preceded KP's step up moment by a quarter...I'm not drawing a conclusion there, but it's worth noting. RoLo deserves his props right now, it's been a while now that he's stepped up his play to another level making him too valuable to bench with under 20 mins out there. It's hilarious how fast players back down from him, the only guy I've seen instill more fear in his Knicks jersey is Ron Artest aka a real warrior.
Jose: 7,6 and 3 with everyone else doing so much work you can't hate on the numbers too much. His defense can be frustrating at times but not much you can ask for against guys that quick. He made a couple of timely baskets in his few opportunities, passed well for the most part and looks better when he doesn't have to pull too much weight period. He's still my least favorite starter, but he's working hard.
D-Will: Still takes a minute to get flowing sometimes which scares me because Fish used to have a short leash. But once he got himself comfortable with a trip to the line, he just sorta started to go off. He notched 8 free throws, mainly by driving like a mad man. His back door cut for an alley oop is the highlight of the game on nights when the other guys don't go so HAM. His defense was hit or miss and he could grab more boards but the boards he did get led to quick attacks consistently. 15,4 and 1...nice game.
Lance: 3-5 for 7 points and a board. He came out looking like he'd go off in the first couple of minutes but really did nothing to hurt us except for that one play where he tried to take his man off the dribble inexplicably (got called for a travel that could have also been a carry the time he dribbled the rock). His defense is always good and he had a couple of stand out plays on that end, didn't force the issue and played hard.
Grant: Looked a bit out of sorts out there and just never really got going in short time. When everyone else is killing with the rock in their hands, he's not very necessary. He wasn't bad defensively though.
Galloway: 6 points, no assists, 1 board...but he played really impressive defense outside of some poor closeouts. He had 2 steals and a block (to close out a great half) plus just played reliable ball. He's gotta figure out how to recover when he's pulled from his man though. He picks up a bad foul too often or gives up an easy jumper instead...he needs to find a middle ground.
Fish: Played a tight rotation that meant the starters were gonna hit big minutes but it was necessary. The short rotation is working and has produced better chemistry. He gave Grant a chance and pulled him after a fair shot. His TO work was really solid, timed to cut momentum for the Hawks and taking advantage of opportunities that the Hawks' TO's gave him. I was skeptical of him flipping about defense when the offense looked so ugly, but the defensive play has helped spark better offense. He's done a legitimate job lately and shown some improvement.
Random: Organ player dropping the Boondocks instrumental was fire. He didn't cut his little track snippets short, dude went in on instrumentals. Give him a Friday Night Knicks slot and get rid of the cursed one ASAP. The Hawks really miss Carroll huh? They play tough, physical ball but every time a Knick player checked them; they backed down quick. I like Milsap a lot, but he got punked repeatedly trying to get tough. Carroll doesn't strike me as fake tough and usually the fake tough guys are way more believable with a real goon mixed in.
