After a loss like that, I don't even think it's worth breaking down individual performances...suffice to say that only Melo and D-Will truly played well. The entire rest of the roster was ass, my observations though...
. Atlanta's adjustment was literally just tighter ball denial...that's all it took to blow up the system. Their offensive success was as simple as repeatedly running defenders into high screens until a mismatch presented itself. This has been the scheme used by some other teams to get easy looks for weeks now (Orlando coming to mind).
. Teams that run and gun tend to throw our defenders for a loop and our guards really struggle to contain quality slashers. I'm not sure that there's an easy solution for this issue in the defensive scheme.
. KP came out aggressive and looked good in the first, but after he went to the bench he never came back with the same level of aggressive play. When he asserts himself in the offense, he can create all kinds of headaches, but this was some of the weakest energy I think we've seen from him in a game.
. The bench was actually pretty effective in putting points on the board, but what a ridiculous amount TO's from these guys. The starters weren't much better but the ball protection from our bench was just atrocious.
. D-Will really does have X-factor ability when he's on his game. He was a lone bright spot in this one.
. Fish got caught in a tough situation, trying to preserve legs for the second game in a back to back but also with his team fighting. I won't blame him for holding off on putting Melo back in while the lead ballooned, but I do think it was a mistake to put Melo back in once the lead was 15. He's just back from an ankle injury and the game was lost, so I wish he'd have just thrown the rest of the roster into the fire instead of sending Melo back out.
. Afflalo has kinda vanished on us in the past few games. He looked poised to be 15 ppg lock but has had some off shooting. He's still at his best posting up guys and I think he should be doing that even more often since he's been struggling to hit the jumper consistently.
. RoLo probably deserves a shout out here. ATL is fairly undersized and he was able to establish deep position in the post to make those guys pay. The head butt was clearly accidental but it's a really unfortunate one because Lopez was finally on his way to a nice performance. I'm not sure the result changes if he's out there, but this was finally a game where you could see his value in the line-up.
. This was also a game where you could see why Melo ISO-Ball is a necessary evil sometimes. He had 4 TO's and only 12 attempts while he had a hot hand. I like that he's really working to have that well rounded game and involve people, but his numbers 2 and 3 were M.I.A. No matter what the situation is, I think Melo needs a minimum of 18 attempts a game even when he's shooting like ass. That will keep the defense honest and off balance plus it will keep the mistakes to a minimum (not just his own mind you, but the young guys as well who will have a bit less pressure to create for everyone on a handful of possessions).
