O'Quinn, Early, Derrick William & Calderon are going to be interesting people to watch come Dec 16th when trades start happening.
Add Seraphin to that list. I think right now his 2.8 contract is the best thing the knicks got to either get a young player with some potential or a late first round pick from a playoff team that wants some big man depth. Same for Galloway who is another guy on a cheap contract who looks like a contributor.
Having seen Phil's moves I could see him moving these guys for a pick above anything else.
I really wanna see how that Whiteside situation is gonna play out with Miami, the got enough to give him the max he'll want, but last I heard he was disgruntled over touches. This free agency class isn't that great, but Whiteside is the guy I'm hoping for the most.
I would say he would be the number #1 choice but he hates to pass once he gets the ball. Batum in that Lance Thomas role running off screens and shooting 3's in a small ball lineup would be nice
Calderon (unfortunately)
AA
Batum
Melo
KP
is a much better lineup and beyond just playing with better players in Melo and KP than who he is playing with in Charlotte. The knicks have that strong Blazer connection to try to talk to him to come over.
Also the best chance the knicks have to get a star FA is in the 2017 FA is full of great PG who can run the triangle (westbrook, Teague, Curry, not a star but George Hill) and the knicks will have legit Max money and Bird rights for guys they might want to keep. It'll take a while, and Melo won't be dominant. But in 2 years through FA the knicks could really be a deep team.
Back to the FA dream huh? When are yall going to learn that getting star free agents isn't how teams are built. There are exceptions, but by in large contenders are not built via the FA market, the last few years that is all Knicks fans seem to talk about, getting someone in the summer to join Melo and it never works out. The Knicks aren't getting Horford or Durant and realistically why would you want Conley? He's looked like shyt this year and isn't a triangle PG.
It seems like the Heat method of team building really had an affect on some of you. Build organically via smart trades now that you have a potential franchise player, bolster the roster with young undervalued free agents that could be due for a breakout year and buy draft picks, that's how the Knicks are going to get into contention, not holding out hope some player about to fall off their peak will sign.
I know the idea to just start to build around KP seems like this great idea but don't think its wise to just jettison the Melo era yet. Look at the Spurs they didn't just say fukk Robinson once they had Duncan. The knicks aren't at that level as the spurs were but the theme is the same. Get quality Roleplayers and draft well (which not for nothing the knicks have had a top tier draft program for years now. Just no picks) so KP can come up in a winning organization and look to build around him with talent like anyone else without becoming stuck. Even if he becomes option 1A melo and option 2 is better than without him.
Due to the cap increase only the last year of Melo's contract would be the only year the knicks would be "stuck" during KP's rookie contract and then the next year they will have 27 off the books with Melo's contract. The only real risk is if Melo starts to suck between now and 34 and even now coming off an injury that doesn't look like a guarantee. If the knicks build their roster up I think they can pull a Star PG in 2017 with the promise of 2 more years with Melo + KP and a legit team and 2 years of KP + Melo's cap space (for another piece) and a legit team.
