Didn't get to watch as closely as I'd normally like so I didn't get to really go in but...
Melo - Every time the offense seemed like it was slipping into a slump, he'd make a play. He looks like the reliable scorer we've always known about but his shot selection has been pretty damned strong through three and he's making the shots he should. Not much forcing of anything and on defense it was clear that he was trying to shoot passing lanes (particularly in the third). Good performance, wish he'd have shown more on the boards though.
R-Lo - Really started the game strong and showed what he can do if a defense chooses to focus elsewhere. When he's not getting the board, he's creating space on the floor for someone else to grab it. This is just the type of workman C that you like to have out there.
Calderon - Forgettable performance. Not a particularly bad game or anything, just didn't do much to stand out. I did like that he took a few jumpers when defenders sagged into the lanes. Made a couple of strange passing decisions you normally wouldn't expect from him.
Sasha -Outside of a propensity to the shot and TRY to make defenders pay when they sag...not much I like about his game. He hustles, but I don't like the ball in his hands. He's streaky though, so a hot streak could be all he needs. I'd love to see Thannasis get a shot and I'd rather see this guy's minutes cut than the young players'.
Lance - Due to KP being out and D-fish wanting roster continuity, this guy was thrust into a role he really shouldn't have to be in this season ever. I won't complain too much other than to say, he's not a starter and probably won't make it into our regular season rotation.
KOQ - This is the one scary thing about O'Quinn, he can pick up foul trouble in a hurry. That said, I didn't hate the fouls he picked up. He mistimed taking a charge for one and caught a few challenging guys who would otherwise have an easy bucket. Even in light minutes, the system fit shows on offense with him and he was chasing more rebounds than his stat line suggests.
D-Will - The motor is fun to see. He attacks the rim with reckless abandon unlike anyone else we've got (Grant being the only one close) and gets contact often. His jumper looks like the latter portion of last season, which I was hoping for. It's not a perfect J, but if he's in rhythm he can knock down the shot. He still doesn't rebound well at all for such an athlete but he does run the floor really well. He picked up some dumb TO's and a couple where he tried to do too much (rushed outlet to Grant for instance) but overall, he seems to be embracing his role in this early going. The guy can score when he gets opportunities and with other players that require attention, he's getting those chances right now. Hopefully he keeps it up.
Jerian Grant - Another really strong performance, he's an instant contributor even as a rookie. Some of the passes he made were borderline spectacular (that no look to KOQ...my GOD!). He handles the rock really well, can distribute and attacks the rack. If he develops a jumper, his game could really expand. He's already a solid defensive player, high motor guy and has one of my favorite traits in guards; he gets after rebounds and loose balls with real dedication despite his height disadvantage.
Langston Galloway - So much focus is on Grant that I worry people will miss how consistently he seems to play out there. He's letting the game come to him, not forcing anything and giving us whatever we need. Most of our guys tonight seemed to have highs and lows but this guy was steady all night. He's the type of player you never complain about going into the game because he can impact the game with his defense, with smart offensive play or even on boards like he did tn.
Early - Really seemed to struggle but made some nice plays late. He had a timely block, made a nice steal and seemed to prioritize passing to uneven results. He's the definition of a developmental player for sure, so headache games are expected, that he managed some positive production (assists and those defensive stats) even while having a frustrating game overall is a nice sign that he could find ways to impact the game if he grows some.
Amundson - Didn't notice him grabbing so many boards, falls in the same category as Lance as an "is what it is" guy at this point. His effort level and will to work make him a good end of the bench guy. If we get desperate for a big, he'll at least come out and provide energy.
D-Fish - Even when Philly made some runs propelled by hot shooting streaks, the game seemed to be fairly in hand because certain guys were just always making good plays (Melo, Galloway, Grant particularly with D-Will playing out of his mind in that first half also). Fisher is sticking with his rotation which is cool, but when that means Lance Thomas starts for a team that added depth to
Random thought about the the 6'ers - You know, I bet Thad Young would feast for that team.
