Not sure if this went around, but The Ringer has a piece on Olympic Melo
Olympic Carmelo Is Unguardable — The Ringer
Listen, if you're gonna trade a star, a lottery pick and the number 2 pick is a pretty good package.
folks need to get their feet back down to earth with the melo love. he does this every olympics, he's mostly shooting 3's, the 3pt line is closer, and again...it's the olympics with some of the best players in the world on his team. i usually like melo following the olympics because he comes into the season ready to go...but he's 4 years older, of course.
either way, the biggest takeaways IMO is that he'll go into the season in better shape than the non-olympic years, and that he's winning again while on the team...so it's hopefully a confidence booster.
Melo is having the summer of a lifetime, between the way he's playing, the knicks being interesting again, and him being turning into Malcom. Let the love-fest continue.
I just want him well rested coming into the season. Hopefully after this coming week, he takes some time off.
The Olympics show what Melo is capable of when he has talented players with him. Everyone on the Olympic team plays with another all-star players on their respective NBA teams (sans Boogie). But if it was LeBron going off like Melo, ya'll wouldn't be saying sh*t.
Listen, he definitely benefits from a couple factors -- better teammates facilitate and get him more open looks, he gets to play a LOT of 4, against lesser athletes or overmatched big men, and the 3pt line is closer, and actually lands in an area that he LOVES to operate from.
You think I give a Fukk about what he does in the olympics
Make the godamn playoffs
And then there's this. Which is valid also. I just happen to like the olympics.
Like somebody just said, Melo, playing this well at age 31 shows that his game won't fall off terribly like some of you have been saying for the past 2 f*cking seasons. Melo never relied on his athleticism.
And how is playing with great talent silly logic? When Melo doesn't have to do every cot damn thing, and isn't the main target of the opponents' defense, he can thrive.
Watch the ball breakdown video again, fam, it breaks it down perfectly.
I mean, his game is suited to declining athleticism, as long as he's using it properly. His insistence that he wants to be on the wing playing the 3 is actually counter-current to your point.
We're seeing him play great as the Olympics team 4... blowing by slower big men, using the space and pacing. On top of that, he ALSO has some talented teammates to get him good shots. I mean, it's tough to judge this kinda stuff when you have a team that is +50 points better than the opponents, but I think it's fair to say there are a lot of factors.
I don't think anybody can argue that Melo has lost a step, but that hasn't cripple his game because of the things he does well, positioning, footwork, distance stroke, bully ball on the blocks. That being said, he's getting older, older players lose juice and are more susceptible to injury, those are just the facts. Le'ts hope we don't have to worry about that.
For now, the "trade melo" gang, of which I have been a part-time member -- need to take a break. They went out and got expensive vets to put around Him and KP (instead of young guys with upside) -- which means we're here to see some results now. And, as such, the future is now. This is no longer a rebuilding team.
Conventional wisdom tends to immediately shoot to the stretch four being the reason Melo is so much more effective in world play, but I'd argue that it's more important that he has actual playmakers around him. His efficiency when his PG's play well has always been strong whether at PF or SF. It tends to dip when he has to do everything for himself...aka a big chunk of his career. The real take aways should be how effective he is in catch and shoot (always has been), how his shot is in midseason form (slow starter but on Olympic years he starts better) and the fact that he manages to stand out on a roster full of star players (mainly because so many people want to dismiss him or rate him lower than some of these cats).
He's been great this summer. Both on and off the court. I think there are probably a bunch of reasons he looks great on the olympic team, which i've laid out above. Hopefully this momentum carries over, and hopefully Hornasexy is watching this style of play, and already cooking up ways to get Melo easy catch and shoot opportunities, along with mismatches he can beast on.
Something I noticed about that Melo post up video was that a lot of the time he would get the ball with 10 or less seconds left of the shot clock forcing him to create something quickly.
