What I Liked:
. The bench had it's most productive impact game in a very long time, even in spite of the ridiculous Sasha play. Galloway found his jumper, KOQ's body language has been telling the past couple of games and Lance was effective on George all the way up until George exploded in the fourth (not sure if anyone would have held him and I blame Rambis for not adjusting to that not Lance).
. Calderon with his starting spot on the line grew a pair of balls and took shots.
. KP shot 50% from the field, drew 8 FT's and challenged shooters at the rim more effectively than he has in a while.
. The last two plays of the game were two good looks on inbounds plays. KP was wide open and then Melo was; that they missed sucks but we had two good opportunities to take this game.
. AA played poorly and got benched. Walt hinted at an undisclosed injury which would explain his drastic fall off recently and he was right about AA limping or moving gingerly at times.
. The more losses, the closer we get to the time where there's no good excuse to keep Grant benched.
What I hated:
. Sasha still getting minutes over Grant is horrendous. I love that Rambis handcuffed Cleamons to Grant so that he's constantly being advised, but nothing beats in game reps.
. Melo vs Myles Turner happened multiple times. I typically like a team sticking to it's rotation instead of being forced to adjust but Turner was clearly too big for Melo. In the fourth, Rambis stuck to Lance at 3 and Melo at 4 while George ABUSED Lance. Melo wouldn't have guarded PG any better, but getting a second big man in would have taken away the second option from the Pacers since KOQ really owned Myles Turner when they matched up.
. The reaction to Melo is exaggerated here. Look at what he put up the past 5 games, he's been doing everything he can for the team. This was an awful game and he deserves some criticism but damn if people aren't quick to forget how much he's been giving this squad when no one else would help. If the bench can do half of what it did last night and Melo does what he's been doing every other game in the Rambis era (yuck) so far, we'll start winning some games.
. Some of the poor coaching decisions that stuck through two guys now are really frustrating. Lance Thomas needs to never inbound the ball with his flustered rushing hands. Sasha doesn't play intelligently yet is seen as a triangle positive. Those suck.
End thoughts:
Rambis is a bad coach, but I still edge him over Fisher because at least the majority of his choices seem to fit a logic I can follow. When you're picking between garbage and trash, this is what you get. Seeing the role players put up production was refreshing, even without the star showing up we hung in and fought this one out. Now if everyone could get on the same page at the same time, that would be nice. I'm not overly attached to these results, just trying to see how players look comfort wise and progression wise...so far the jury's out but I do think a lot of the bench guys look more comfortable knowing that they'll get their minutes and the rest of the team is pretty much where it was with Fisher. It's a modest improvement.
