Terrible loss, really no way you can sugarcoat it. One of the worst of the season but these are the kind of games you are gonna get with a young team (not age wise) that's only had 41 games together.

If I can make one complaint, I thought Fisher taking out Porzingis with 5 mins to go in the 4th quarter was an extremely bad move in hindsight. Nets had 2 dunks during that stretch with Porzingis out and they didn't relinquish the lead after that point. I'm not sure if the Nets get those points with both Lopez and Porzingis clogging the middle.

The Nets are the worst team (thats actually trying) in the entire East, and we in here talking about refs :beli:

When we're looking at a 1 game difference between us & the next team in the standings in March, we're gonna be looking back like "yea they shouldn't have blown that one"

I wasn't very invested in last night's game (dropped in the Realgm game thread to say as much but forgot to put it here). That's not to excuse these guys but every flaw is magnified on tired legs and that 3 pt shooting and FT shooting as well as the piss poor 3 pt defense reflect guys who just didn't have legs last night. Not gonna go into individual analysis, just some thoughts:

. Lance Thomas hasn't been good for a while now. He's been solid thanks to hustle and defense, but he has been mired in a shooting slump that he's somewhat hidden by having one hot quarter in a couple of games to pick up the FG% to respectable.

. D-Will continues to be a revelation with the added work on the boards. I always said he'd put his scoring numbers up with more minutes and I'm not backing off that stance, that part is who he has always been. A rhythm player that needs time to get into a groove; the rebounds just help him get there quicker. The blatant foul by Joe Johnson irked me because there was still a chance if Williams got those FT's and made them, but it shouldn't be that close a game anyway. Refs have been bad this season imo, not just on the Knicks just in general.

. Grant, Galloway and Calderon all looks solid offensively imo but none of them played defense I could appreciate last night. There is no circumstance in which I excuse Shane Larkin doing those numbers.

. KP and AA both looked tired. AA was still strong, but I think on a night with more in the tank he takes it home when we need someone to work through late. KP just had no juice on jumpers but did do a lot of the other things that I can appreciate.

. RoLo vs Brook was tough bc I think RoLo had a commendable effort but Brook kinda overwhelmed him. Where frustration sets in is that Fish went from playing 3 other big men the night before to not throwing any different looks at Brook on this night. We got torched and I didn't like the lack of shifting gears.

. Whether he plays 1 minute or 15 minutes, any game that Sasha goes into without a blowout lead is a damned forfeit to me.

. Not surprised that our bench had solid +/- numbers since it was the second night of a back to back. Thought Fish shoulda leaned on the young bench guys even more than he did, but not mad about it.

Fisher coaching is going to be a huge reason whether we are competitive or not. GS have players that can do a little bit of everything and are extremely comfortable with eachother. Our pg spot whether Grant, Gallo, or Caldo needs to score because Steph isn't the best defender. Attacking him and making him work will help a bit though they have Klay and Iggy. I'm hoping Melo is good to go because I guarantee he'll be seeing multiple bodies thrown at him. GS isn't the strongest position at the 5 and I think R Lo can keep him at bay. Ghost P. against Green is the matchup that I'm curious about. He has the height but, Green is strong as hell and can spread the floor while being an underrated passer. Hopefully Barnes isn't playing either cause that's another guy Melo would have to deal with. They'll be on tv tomorrow so I'll be able to watch the game easier to see how the offense is looking. I still think we have a very good shot at getting them and hopefully they'll be sleeping on us. They've lost 2 games the entire season so hopefully they'll think it's a walk in the park. Defense and fighting over screens is necessary and their going to have to deal with it because they score quickly and like to run. Just my opinion but I'm sure @storyteller probably has a much better analysis and I'm curious what he thinks as well:salute:

I think our propensity for vanishing for chunks of time offensively makes the game a longshot at best against GS who has a propensity for going NUTS for minutes at a time. I actually don't think fighting over screens works against these guys because they hit three's too well with even a little space; you really have to employ a switching mentality and chase them off of the line because they'll still hurt you but not as badly on inside plays. KP vs Green really interests me because Green's height has me wondering if KP's length and agility can be a legitimate answer to Green's all around game. This is one where I'd like to see a lot of both Lance and D-Will, one guy because he's vocal to wing defenders and knows switching better than everyone else and the other because if the Warriors make the game a track meet, he'll be the guy to keep up and attack the other end.

Main Keys:
. Chase them off the three point line and make 'em dribble. Outside of Steph who's just unstoppable, I think we can really fluster the other guys inside with our combination of big bodies in the middle. Even if that's wishful thinking, GS is too good at making teams pay from three not to hope that works.

. Win the boards battle in dominant fashion. Can't just win it slightly either. We're a bigger team with more length. Box Green out, I trust RoLo to outplay Bogut and Melo should have his way strength wise against all players not named Green (I'd love to see those two battle it out for a bit just as a fan a great basketball match-ups).

. That second unit can keep pace in a running game. Let Grant have high pick and rolls/pops through KP but do that ish with a fast pace before GS gets positioning. D-Will should be running weak side cuts ALL NIGHT. Lance's job will be to keep those dudes all locked in defensively. Outplaying the GS starters is a tough one, but I think their bench can be susceptible.

. Either Melo or AA needs to go off...even if we play a perfect game, GS is so quick to pile on points that we'll need a guy going above and beyond. I won't put that on KP matched with such a good defender, it's gotta be one of the vets.

. Finally, Fish HAS to be quick on the trigger. I keep mentioning GS being able to go off in spurts that only take minutes, he has to sense momentum and look to cut it off before the spurt sparks a 12-2 run or some similar killer 3-5 minute span.

Thanks for this. Great post. I thought NY cleaned up the droughts and had been finishing 4th quarters strong for quite a while now. When do you remember their last real scoring drought?

It's a bit unfair to call out the 4th quarter against the Bucks where the second unit struggled early in the quarter because it was a bare bones line-up but that group came into a blow out and then the starters had to come back in to close the game out. One that has no caveats would be the Spurs game in the second quarter, partially because the refs loosened up and the Spurs got physical but physicality has been a common thread for these droughts. I also recall it happening in the Hawks game right before that.

These fools couldn't stop the pick n roll all night long.

P&R has been killing the Knicks all year. They're usually effective at defending the first pick and roll, but when there are multiple picks on a single possession (like there usually are in the NBA) is when things start to break down... and the guard either gets as easy jumpshot or breaks down the defense and gets into the paint.

Knicks have to realize defending the pick and roll takes all 5 players and everybody has to help/rotate. If I was D. Fish I would spend the next couple days showing them tapes of the Celtics defense via 2007-2009... That was one of the best teams I've ever seen at defending the pick and roll. Them and the Spurs.
