Short version: Man the first couple of minutes of this game were sloppy and ugly, Fisher called a 20 second TO quick as hell to get people in gear and the only player that responded was Melo...but that was enough to snap guys out of it. Coach makes a quick move, leader makes a big three point play and all of a sudden everyone calms down. The defensive scheme was brilliant here (great job staff), they let Giannis take threes and didn't over commit to guys with poor percentages which allowed for just a myriad of blocks and fast breaks off rebounds. Offensively, there were spotty stretches but they only ever lasted a couple of minutes and when things got rolling it was a beauty to watch. This had to be the most dunks in a Knicks game for years now. Lance and D-Will both played really high quality ball, Galloway didn't force anything, Grant struggled but you could see him getting inside the defense plenty. I ignored the starters just now because they were too good for a quick write. This looked like a superior team just taking care of business, which hasn't happened often this year...but it feels like it'll happen more and more with the coaching improved, the star playing like an MVP contender recently and the chemistry at an all time high.
Melo: What more is there to say? This has been Melo for a while now (since his shooting improved really). He's playing near elite D on most nights and on the others it's typically elite. His passing has defenses completely unbalanced and when they left him alone with one man a few times in the second half, he murdered his defenders. He hit the Bucks defense harder than Vontaze Burfict hits defenseless receivers in crunch time. Since there's not much new to add on him, I'll just highlight his first half shot chart. There were three shots outside of the paint and everything else was an inside score. He saw a weak interior defense and got himself going by taking advantage. His IQ, selflessness and energy are at a level I've never seen before; and that's taking into account the Nuggets season with Billups and April Melo. 24, 10 and 8. How he only clocked one block and 0 steals is completely beyond me, score keepers need to be smacked. Also, just 1 TO...early on he was passing but turning it over, lately he's been more protective but still effective.
KP: I was a bit upset at his defense early because Jabari Parker was getting too much space to shoot. But apparently the team design was to let a poor shooting team shoot and by the third quarter it had led to a block party. 15 points, 6 boards, 2 assists and FIVE blocks. He'd be at 50% from the field if not for taking a half court heave to close the second. His chase down block was beautiful and his timing last night was pretty spectacular. He was far from perfect though. He had 4 TO's, doubles in the post still catch him off guard so that awareness needs some work. He sometimes gets too deep defensively and post ups from bigger guys are gonna be a struggle. All of that said, he impacts the game so many ways that those flaws don't change his positive impact in the least and he'll be scary good when they're taken care of (because they'll fade with experience and offseason work).
AA: Struggled with his shot in spite of plenty of good looks. Just an off shooting night. 11 points and 3 assists were the only numbers of consequence on a quiet night for him. He did go back to flashing the double team threat against Monroe in the post early though and defensively he had the second toughest assignment of the night (maybe first) but did a really nice job. So he bounced back on his defense, contributed ball movement and was good in spite of poor shooting. I hope he doesn't have another long stretch of looking for that jumper because we'll need his jumper but he makes some important shots even on a bad night.
Jose: 3-5 with 2-3 from three point land which was nice to see after the painful miss last time. He wasn't as aggressive shooting as with the Spurs, but he WAS aggressive in pushing the ball up the floor more quickly and that led to some really easy sets for our guys. He had three steals that really set a nice tone for how he'd handle passing lanes. He also hustled hard for a couple of his boards and his assists were legit. 9,7 and 4 with 3 steals. A really nice bounce back, especially with his D on MCW...he made the kid work all night.
RoLo: Here's a nice addition to his scoring of late, he got to the line 5 times. 4-8 and 3 of those makes came off of nice footwork and soft touch, things you don't hear mention of with regard to the other Lopez brother. 13 points, 9 boards, 2 assists and the 1 block was a beaut. Monroe kinda had his way with everybody, but as Fish said in the post game...they did make the guy earn it. Good offense beats solid defense. So man defense was a bit of a loss for RoLo but he played it commendably and his help D was better than that one block shows. One more notable, if you get to catch Knicks in 60, take time out to watch Greg Monroe set screens for his guys and then watch RoLo set screens for our guys...you'll immediately appreciate RoLo a bit more.
Lance: 9 FGA's and only 2 of them were forced (both with huge leads). That's what I loved about his game last night, the defense plus our ball movement got him really nice looks and he took advantage all night. On defense he was Lance Thomas, all over the floor and playing hard nosed ball. His vision and hands are still weak but he makes up for that ish on a night like last night. When he's not forcing things, I'm content watching him rock. Hopefully he keeps that up. 13,2 and 1...still would like to see better rebound work from him if I had a criticism.
D-Will: Never found his jumper all night even when he caught the rock in rhythm. But when he was in with the starters (typically a Lance role), he had so many gaps to shoot off the ball that it was a mini dunkfest. His defense was up and down but even on the nights when he rebound totals have been low you can see more effort than any other time his career on 'em. 8,6 and 1 on 4-9 shooting. He really shined in the first half and has become a bit of a headache for defenders off the bench. I'd like to see him run with that second quarter line-up some more because the spacing made him a terror.
Galloway: Very quiet game but not a particularly bad one imo, just that other guys got the touches while he took what came to him. 5,1 and 1 with a nice three point make that hopefully he can start doing more often. Not a standout game in any way.
Grant: He made some passes to cutters that went right through their hands, didn't quite get his drive and kicks on target and couldn't find his shot. He still got inside on the D, but didn't make 'em pay like he has in recent runs. He's a bit set up to fail with that fourth quarter line-up where spacing is rough. Not a good one.
Fish: Really nice bounce back after the loss. The defensive scheme was as good as you could ask, when the players came out flat he called a TO, when the team got into an offensive rut; he made moves to get guys in there that would change that. He didn't wait too long on moves and that's a huge help. It's been one of my biggest criticisms of him all year and I thought he was back to hesitant with the Spurs but he made the right choices right away in this one. I gotta shout out his post game interviews the past two too. "We don't get a golden star" after the Spurs game followed by "these guys know they have to leave everything out there" were nice comments post Spurs. After this one he brought the KP lovefest back to Earth a bit with some challenges for the rookie that I think were warranted. His one questionable move was that fourth quarter bench line-up but I'll explain why it made sense. Normally he benches KP in the third so that the fourth quarter crew has him to work through. KP was really hot in the third though (two games running) and Fish rode the high energy moment to a 20+ point lead. The fourth quarter crew's spacing suffered with RoLo in and RoLo fouled out, but their poor play only meant the starters got in with 12 points of cushion instead of 20 and KP had one of his best impact quarters of the season in that third. This did reinforce that KP and Melo are the two guys we need splitting floor time to make things move well, but my one adjustment would have been to get Afflalo out there with that unit to be a focal point...he was struggling, so I understand the decision to rest him...but that unit needed an offensive calming presence and RoLo isn't that guy.
Random: The pic of the bench celebrating is one of the best images this season. What I love about it is that in the center of that celebration are Seraphin, Vujacic and Lou Amundson...they've been DNP's consistently since the rotation shortened and they don't care. They're ecstatic about the quality ball they're witnessing from their boys. I love that type of thing. On the Bucks, Jabari looks like a different player since the knee went down, he'd looked really promising before. Middleton would be a nice third or fourth option but he doesn't have much help in Milwaukee. Monroe is a spacing and defensive nightmare, I liked the idea of him in our offense...I was wrong. He makes you appreciate RoLo more in so many ways.
