I live in the Bronx surrounded by mainly Dominicans but ricans as well.

You can not always tell. I know Dominicans as white Europeans and ricans as dark as Africans.

There's a ton of first generation American ricans that don't even speak Spanish. You'll never find that with Dominicans

Grew up with Ricans and went to school with them from Elementary school to college. Ricans are heavily americanized since these Rican families have been in the US for 2 or 3 generations. So some of them don't speak Spanish and those that do are looked at funny by other hispanics. Also PR is a US territory.

With music Dominicans listen to Dembo (spelled it wrong) which is basically Dominican reggae. They listen to their own cultures music. Ricans listen to reggaeton but it hasn't been the same since Gasolina by Daddy Yankee back in 05. Ricans that I know are heavy in hip hop and listen to that more than reggaeton ton. Dominicans I know listen to hip hop secondary but the younger Dominicans love Dembo.

Sure, there are dark and light in both nationalizes, but statistically the darker Spanish speaking person is probably going to be Dominican, Colombian, Panamanian or Peruvian. And since it's NY, it's probably gonna be a Dominican.

Since you live in NY, you know whenever someone black speaks spanish it's assumed they're Dominican.
