after coming out strong out the gate. A lot of associates of mine have been discussing why should they update after seeing the battlefields, Killzones etc. The issue I think many of the non tech gamers are having is the fact that Graphics are hitting that point of diminishing return, unless you know the difference between 1080p 2x MLAA and 8x. This isn't the 480p-----> 720p era.... where the polygon count doubled and you noticed a significant difference of the mapping on the characters. it's also difficult to persuade consumers to jump at something that is essentially similar to the setup they already have. Innovation in console gaming is what it is going to have to happen to stimulate these systems further then the launch core.

Not to mention mobile, tv, Tablet, PC markets are now much bigger then they were 8 years ago.

what do y'all think?

I think it depends on what else they bring to the table. Better graphics wont cut it anymore. We're gonna need some advancements in gameplay and immersion. Some new play expierinces and stories, not just the same old shootemup. If games can move into a lane where people actually want to "expierince" them not just play them then the console gaming industry will be succesful for a long time.

I hope the medium that they put their games on allow for a longer more immersive game

you are right that graphics are approaching a plateau, but that could turn out to be a good thing...

one thing is certain, great games sell hardware. with the combination of unreal engine 4 making things even easier for developers, unreal engine 3 becoming even cheaper for indie devs once it is outdated, and all consoles embracing indie games, i have a feeling that we will see what is quite possibly the best generation ever. what we do know is that every company not named nintendo will have lots of cores and lots of ram. now there is no reason for game development to be hamstrung to simply making prettier versions of old gameplay. the interesting gameplay advances that were happening on PC at the turn of the century (such as deus ex) can be resumed again now that consoles are really about to step up. stuff like watchdogs and the last of us is a good step in the right direction, and though i have some issues with the gameplay, i think bioshock infinite is going to inspire the hell out of a lot of developers to start aiming higher when it comes to story telling and aesthetics.

the only things that worry me in the near future are terrible DRM schemes, terrible DLC schemes, and the death of middle-sized developers. im hoping that an even wider availability of good licensed engines will mean that medium sized developers can cut costs, but there is a risk that the public only wants two kinds of games: indie and AAA. if that is the case, the rest of us are going to miss out on some good stuff.

it also doesn't help that these games like BF4 and Watchdogs will also be available for current gen consoles

PS4 will be fine. Its going to be the x box thats going to flop. I believe Xbots will be so discouraged that their system is trash and flopping that they will go back to PC gaming from wence they came leaving the landscape to Sony to win this gen, early. Xbots are becoming discouraged at gaming in general seeing PS4's future on the cusp of another quiet Coup. Sad to see.

I don't think so. But I think this next gen will be the gen where anything after won't be that noticeable of a jump from previous.

I think 60fps and 1080p on all games is enough alone to make most people make the jump. These 2 things are noticeable before any other technical updates under the hood.

Me myself I wanna be done with 30fps altogether....unless the graphics are super amazing.. then maybe 120/240 hz modes can make up for smoothness.

Not to mention I think these newer systems will take more advantage of seamless operation with tablets/smart phones which is grown everyday...these older consoles hit a wall with that so there's even more reason to update.

the good thing is that the price conscious or fickle customer is irrelevant at launch since early adopters and fanboys buy up all of the hardware inventory for quite a while. i doubt MS and sony can really manufacture enough to meet demand from holiday season to spring. then as the early adopter/fanboy market saturates, they should have something compelling and exclusive coming out (if they are smart)

Tell that to Killzone 30fps or BF4 720p. Its not the jump that we were expecting.

ultimately I prefer the PC cause it's a more 'open' platform. graphics and AAA games are cool, but some of the best gaming experiences I had last year came from Black Mesa and DayZ

one of my favorite games in recent memory has been hotline miami

I still gotta check that out. FTL is great too

those kinds of games show how simple graphics can still make a great game. theoretically they could wrap better graphics around them, and make an even better game
