He buck broke himself. If he didn't like it at first why do it later especially when you were the lead actor?

nikka How about I don't want to see that shyt and leave it at that? You didn't say you wanted to see it either but I'm not making assumptions about you.But none of this is about me. Y'all are the ones expressing being uncomfortable in the presence of homosexual interaction on TV and I'm assuming in person as well. I just straight up don't care, it's not something I think about. I engage in these conversations because I find it fascinating and hilarious that people still think like this.
Once again.. It screams not being comfortable with yourself. That might be tough to hear but it's true. It's like how I felt about this kind of shyt in middle school, and then I grew up.
I'm just trying to figure out how y'all can still be this backwards in your thinking.
He was bored. When he played Myrtle the first time, he was a kid. Reginald VelJohnson and Jo Marie Payton talked to him about how uncomfortable they were with him playing the character, because they were sensitive about black men wearing dresses for entertainment. He was also worried that when the episode aired, kids would be making fun of him in school. It was what other people thought that made him embarrassed about playing the character, even though he put his all into the role. His father saw how uncomfortable he was the night they taped the episode and let the writers know that character is off the table.
Years later, Jaleel had more confidence in himself and probably just wanted a challenge. He went into the writer's room one day, told them they could bring the character back if they wanted and that was it. It wasn't his choice to play Myrtle the first time, but it was the second time.
We see how it worked out for him. He "challenged himself" and now he has no job.
I get it he wanted to do something to keep the checks coming in but by keeping the checks for the show coming in he typecasted himself.
It's crazy that even Reginald VelJohnson wasn't cool with it.
The thing is, Jaleel ended up typecast because of how well he played his roles. He committed himself to Urkel and all of his other personas but people ignore the skill that went into that. It's not his fault. He did his job and he did it well, but Hollywood didn't care. They just saw him as Urkel.
Watching the Uncensored interview, he doesn't sound bitter or upset with how his career turned out. He was still responsible for one of the most recognizable sitcom characters of all-time. Family Matters will bring in residual checks for life, and the show and the character brought a lot of enjoyment for people for years. The only mistake he made was being too good at his job.![]()
