It isn't really a direct prequel, but it happens before alien. It occurs on a different planet than Alien does but you can assume they're the exact kind of planets and installments. I guess the point is it seems none of the engineers could control their bio weapon. It would be nice if the sequel to prometheus explained what happened to the Space Jockey in Alien (he had his chest bursted open).
