WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will deliver a statement about the situation in Ukraine.

The White House says Obama will speak in the briefing room of the White House at 4:45 p.m. EST (2145 GMT).

Obama's statement comes as his administration is expressing growing concern over Russian intentions in Ukraine. Secretary of State John Kerry delivered a blunt warning Friday to Moscow against military moves in the country's southern Crimea region that could further inflame tensions.

Ukraine's acting President Oleksandr Turchynov has urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop "provocations" in Crimea and pull back military forces from the peninsula.

Turchynov stepped in as president after Viktor Yanukovych fled Kiev last weekend.
:lupe: Did not see a thread on this, so posted here.

Surprised no one is talking about this. First, Russian-speaking gunmen took over the Crimean parliament building. Second, hundreds of soldiers took over the airports. They were wearing uniforms but with no insignias, in order to hide the fact they were Russian. But it was obvious that this was an organized military invasion:

From what I've read, Ukraine wants to stay together territorially. They've rallied to overthrow a corrupt ass leader without really having a clear political agenda post-revolution, and I've heard wildly varied opinions on EU/US and Russian alignment, which complicates things somewhat. :mindblown:

How russian is Crimea, historically? Can someone pretty please educate me? :lupe: I know Yanukovich fled to the russian-speaking part of the country, but are they openly harboring him? :lupe:

Russian empire conquers Crimea centuries ago. Ethnic Russians gradually move in. Stalin deported a good chunk of the local Tartar population. Stalin gives Crimea to Ukraine (all within the Soviet Union). Soviet Union collapses, Ukraine declares itself independent and takes Crimea along with it. Tartar diaspora gradually move back to Crimea. Crimea is a little over half Russian-speaking.

Yanukovich fled to Russia. Will give a press conference soon.

Reading Russia Today about this whole situation is a wild ride, a whole bunch of rabid loons over there, not unlike Foxnews viewers.

Or the coli.com summary:

Cacs arguing with other cacs over some backwater cacland and if this escalates too much, it won't be good to anyone, including non-cacs.

RT @CNN: BREAKING: Russian legislators vote unanimously to approve the use of military force in Ukraine. http://t.co/PBiAfXDoFr

:rip:

We should tread carefully on this issue. No way Russia is giving up its influence on a Slavic nation it considers a little brother. That's like us letting Russia or China set up shop in Canada. It's not happening and we need to mind our own business.

It was Nikita Khrushchev in 1954. He was a Russian, but grew up in Ukraine and married an Ukrainian.
So, it was a gift to his wife lol
