how does one test the power supply ?

swap a working psu, and see if the problem persists. unfortunately most people don't have an extra psu laying around

you could take it to a local shop, but that's gonna cost money. but I'm not sure if you planned on fixing this yourself anyway

your problem is probably the psu. you might just want to bite the bullet and spend $40 on a new psu. I don't think you're into pc gaming, so you don't need much wattage. but you don't want this issue again, so get a quality brand like Antec or Corsair. but again, this is if you feel comfortable replacing that yourself. a shop is probably gonna charge you around $100 for the parts and labor, and you'll probably end up with another crap psu

mine does the same, it used to only happen when I would try to play a video game, now it turns off and restarts a few minutes after I start up the computer, I've assumed all along it was a powersupply issue but I haven't got around to testing the power supply because I've been so busy with school

put a fan on power supply if that works then the psu is the problem

They see me trolling, they hating.....
the cables fit but the second power supply unit did the exact same thing the other one kept doin (staying on for a few sec then cutting off, doesn't even stay on long enough 4 the boot screen any more )...

how would i know if the motherboard is the problem?

Swap out a known-good motherboard for yours and see if it continues, I would also double-check to see if your heatsink is firmly placed on top of your PSU and that you have some new thermal paste applied, as it could be overheating and shutting itself off to protect itself from any catastrophic damage - once it reaches a pre-determined maximum temperature (sometimes around 105 degrees C but it depends on the model itself) it will do this.
