I don't know the political affiliations of the new power at ESPN but I think it's as simple as them taking the criticism too heart that ESPN was getting too liberal and we know Lebatard is a line stepper in that regard so I wonder if they are trying to make an example out of them. I also wonder if that's why Mike started speaking up a lot more in regards to touchy race issues and providing the other side of the argument.
it's not just them chopping down lebatard, all their programming is bland AF - radio and tv. you can steer away from political talk and still have more entertaining shows and do things that allow for more than super serious sports takes. HQ, Jalen and Jacoby, and SportsNation and His & Hers, when they were on, were all shows that made/make sports convo more fun by not trying to be the formulaic, serious, astringent Mike and Mike, First Take, NFL Live. On the other hand you have The Jump which leans into political/social justice talk given the demographics of NBA viewers which is still a trash show 80% of the time due to weak hosts.

my thing is, ok, fine, i can halfway give them a break for wanting to be more "real sports" but what shows or talent do they have to bring younger, more diverse, listeners/viewers into the fold and build loyalty amongst them? everything they're promoting/moving toward is like a double down on appealing to 45-70 yr old white men. maybe they feel radio is a lost cause for gen y and gen z :manny:

it'd be one thing if the show was getting low ratings and higher ups wanted changes to fix that, but the show is at the top or near it in all the categories that track listeners and fans...They're one of the few sports talk shows that don't take sports seriously and get rewarded for it. They stand out which imo is good...they break up the monotony of sports radio.

I really can't say younger folks don't fukk with radio as these apps they have are basically the modern spin to that old device. So in a way I get moving things online but these moves over the years felt more of an attack on the show rather than the format the show was delivered to the masses on.

It might be like you're post above says, they want bland, non-offensive, corporate products that are easier to control, and even though they calmed down in recent years, Dan & crew have the history that the new suits just don't want to deal with in the future.

not sure why people feel sad for these people if the show ends (ie no spotify/apple podcast or sirius deal awaiting), that's entertainment, shows end, you move on.

  • mike and roy are producers, sure they may take a pay cut but radio stations/shows and podcasts need producers everyday B.
  • billy could easily become talent of his own - you gotta work your way up taking this route, but he has a big head start having been on LBS.
  • chris cote was a nepotism hire, having the right dad in the right industry...not sure what skills he has, but i don't feel particularly bad for an under-skilled white guy who got a great gig because of his dad's connections.
  • tony seems very junior in his career, he will be shuffled elsewhere on espn or find some other entry level radio role.
  • gotz has money, both from the show and supposedly from other dealings, he has the ability to remain gotz or pivot back to being jon weiner - more serious sports guy, i definitely don't think it's the end of the road for him on radio if the show is truly done

none of these guys are about to be sitting on skid row, i can't find it in me to be a woeful about folks in entertainment wrapping up a production and having to move on

I think they have a 50 million dollar multi year deal waiting for them. Dan's about to make the entire shipping container millionaires with the exception of Tony and the guy that runs the social media.

If they could find space for him, I'd say go to NBC/Peacock, assuming he doesn't mind their relatively small footprint. For the time being, they're letting people cook. Michael Smith is on there on his show spazzing almost daily. Breh calls Trump a mass murderer at least once a week, and ain't shyt happened. :mjlol:

Brother from Another.

It's him and Michael Holley. It's a pretty cool show. Pretty laid back, rarely turns into two guys yelling at each other, unless it's something they're actually passionate about. Also gets into non sports stuff often. A couple of days ago, Smith derailed everything to talk about A Written Testimony and Alfredo for something like 10 minutes.

I been watching that show the last few weeks and I enjoy it. Michael Smith had one of the better layman terms "Defund the police" rebuttals I've seen yesterday. Had me like:ehh:

Young folks are podcast driven over radio.
You know how we are we hate heavy commercials, like to fast forward and like to have things ready qt our availability not programmers.
Now days radio is just a way to promote and build audience for podcast.
One of the reason why ESPN radio and (sports)radio in general is dying off cause podcast are so much more entertaining and enjoyable than regular broadcast radio. More authentic and you can find people you like instead of having someone like Mike Greenberg shoved down your throat.

That conversation was great. It got serious, but stayed respectful, and they both brought valid points. It was nice seeing a conversation about that subject not break down into insults.

You catch the episode where Ricky Smith came on and roasted them over the name of the show? :mjlol:
