this is a toxic culture, but its not isolated from hbcu
most kids in undergrad fuk around and do stupid shyt
go to any ivy league like yale and harvard, and they got alotta those preppy rich kids that stunt, don't do shyt in class, and jus join a frat/organization and party all the time
i suppose the diff is most of those ivy league trust fund babies have millions/billions to fall back on and they know it, while most of those kids at howard don't
But we all know that there are some mistakes some people can afford to make and recover but not others that's just life hence we must not compare with the wrongdoings of Ivy League institutions. I don't frequent the preppy types in my circle even though I went to school with a lot of them. Those legacy admission kids at Harvard and Yale can afford to stunt because they have generational wealth Black kids at Howard U can't as you pointed out in your comment. It's high school all over again at the college level on that campus.
The vid by that Yvette lady even though I disagree with her a lot was on point. We have this whole culture on fascination with materialistic things that it's scary. It's so bad that being called broke has become a pejorative when most working class Americans (especially Black people) are indeed broke working paycheck to paycheck yet we have some in the community who want to denigrate them. That's why I never bought in when these rappers always post luxury cars, designer clothes on IG and try to cover it as "motivation" when we all know they are showing off. This obsession with materialism can lead to criminal and unethical behavior just to be seen and show off as with this guy who didn't have the patience and wanted to take shortcuts in life when he had a job lined up at a reputable law firm with a good salary. Materialistic culture and instant gratification is a bad combo.
I know a Nigerian girl from Oakland who was born here turned down Stanford and Duke so she could attend Howard (graduated 4 years ago class of 2014) to the "HBCU" experience. Her parents til today are salty at her for her decision. First thing they sent to her this morning (as if she didn't know) was this story lol.
