It's both, but moreso the institutional rot in America's structure made sure he could win.

The electoral college with it's unelected electors.

The corporate owned media that edited him to appear more reasonable.

These two things made a huge difference. Even if it went to the courts, the federal and Supreme courts which are full of unelected people are stacked in his favor.

But really at the heart of it all, it was hate. There is a lot of hate in America. I'm going to check out of politics, the news, and social media for the next while and I'm going to really evaluate my options as far as where I could live(state or even country wise to be honest). America is cooked. Radical change will need to happen to the structure and institutions of this country and the lesson of history shows that it will only happen after things are truly so awful that people feel they have no other choice. The calamities that will be unleashed, the sheer insanity and pandemonium that will come out over the next 4 years will be so intense and crippling for so many people and industries that if America makes it through, you'll see new legislation that ensures something like this can't happen again. But that's a minimum of 4 years away.

America did the dumbest possible thing it could have done by electing this man and the people who rep him and millions--possibly billions--around the world will pay the price. What that hopefully means though is that it is truly the beginning of the end of America as a country which is so influential that it's able to destroy the lives of so many around the world because of the dumbass decisions of its people and institutions. This is not how the world should operate and I'm looking forward to the emergence of a multi polar world order. Other countries will have to put aside their differences and start bargaining and negotiating with each other in ways that ignore America. They will have to innovate and come up with various types of deals and negotiations to strengthen themselves so they can grow without having to latch on to just one or two countries.
