My guess is the dad just wanted the son to rob him, which of course is foul. However, the boy ended up escalating it to another level when he killed PNB.

True, but if pnb just gets robbed and not killed I doubt anybody gets arrested. To knowingly plan to murder somebody in broad daylight in front of cameras still boggles my mind.
