1. A 23 year old with 4 years of college ball (plus a red shirt year) is a different player than a 19 year old with one year in college.
2. That's a pretty common belief and that's why, if he does show improvement and get himself a nice contract, it's a selling point to FA's next offseason. That was the whole point of my example.
4. Fish was a rookie coach, dealing with an injury plagued roster that also made multiple roster moves throughout the season. It wasn't an ideal situation for him to begin with, though I agree he needs a lot of work. The identity comment however, wasn't about last season.
Smart players as in the entire Spurs rotation has guys with good bball iq from the stars to the 11th and 12th man. Our locker room is going to have a lot of smart players that can help each other and play within a system. "Talent wins games" was the Isaiah Thomas motto.
A team full of defenders surrounding a scorer who consistently tops the league was the way to build around Iverson, he made the Finals that way. The garbage we trotted out last year was putting up top 10 offense numbers whenever Melo was on the floor with them, and he was on a bum knee from game 3 onward. So the offense will rely on him, but that's worked with complete bums even. Afflalo averaged 18.5 two seasons ago and was at his most efficient playing with Melo, so there's hope the chemistry is still there.
I think you're ignoring how players compliment each other. Monta for 11 million over Afflalo is pure names over fit. Dude is a high usage player, he dominates the ball to the point that Rajon Rondo lost all value playing next to him. Kaman over Lopez...come on now...one of those players is 27 and has mobility to actually succeed against pick and rolls (the dominant offensive set of the day) while the other has played less than 50 games in 3 of the past 5 seasons. Bass over D-Will I agree with, I'd do that one too if it was possible. Trading for Lee was impossible after our signings and would have eaten a more significant amount of cap space than anyone we signed outside of Lopez. Taking each of those FA's individually, none of them are gonna blow minds but they all have complimentary skill sets that more and more journalists and analysts are beginning to recognize.
