WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States will seek an explanation from the Philippines for President Rodrigo Duterte's announcement of a "separation" from Washington, the State Department said on Thursday, calling the remarks baffling and at odds with the two countries' close relationship.

Duterte said during a visit to China on Thursday that "America has lost" in military and economic ties with the Philippines and "I announce my separation from the United States."

"We are going to be seeking an explanation of exactly what the president meant when he talked about separation from the U.S.," said State Department spokesman John Kirby. "It's not clear to us exactly what that means in all its ramifications."

It completely slipped my mind that theres 97m filipinos :mindblown:
I think the US will just closer to Vietnam. India is closer to the Russian orbit so that is a non starter. But let us not kid ourselves losing the Philippines is a major set back for the US Asia pivot.

His own people will kill him before the West has to.

:manny:

The wonderful American imperialist mindset on display... "has to"

:mjlol:

A progressive like you is funny because you'll oppose the death penalty as barbaric, while not blinking once when we extrajudicially kill heads of state, scientists or terrorists, arm groups that kill those against our interests, drone or bomb suspected terrorist targets while every once in awhile inerrantly hitting a group of civilians and all the other death and destruction our foreign policy causes.

So you'll have someone who indisputably commits a crime you don't want our government to execute, but you'll turn around and cosign murdering someone like Duterte because he aligned with adversarial interests.

:francis:

Oh, wait, my bad. Can't forget about those human rights violations he commits because we absolutely don't align with any nations that engage in similar behavior.

Our criminal justice system is completely broken and I oppose the death penalty entirely.

You're comparing apples and hand grenades.

His people will kill him before the West has to if his governance has an averse affect on their lives. Why deny it?

Do you think he's going to gain any regional economic or military allies by aligning with China? Japan? South Korea? Other countries in disputes with China? Countries already under the sway of the US?

What would you say if the US was extrajudicially killing thousands of it's citizens? What would you say if the US became a satellite state?

What? No we don't. Look at what we have accomplished over the years in oceania/se asia...absolutely dikk.

It seems as though almost every american harbors neo colonialist thoughts...

It never fails to amaze me that people think we need to have stronger ties with X or Y.

If we treated these people as equal partners we wouldnt have to strong arm them into accepting our terms for whatever reason.

Quite honestly, duterte either figures im getting fukked by either china or the states so i might as well make moves with the homies on the upswing rather than hilldawg and her cronies.

If we acted as the harbinger of aid instead of the premonition of death many more countries around the world would reach out when requested as opposed to being guarded by the all seeing eye

That's it? We have a messed up perception in the united States. They or we are the largest south east Asian group in the united States. The next larges are Vietnamese, Cambodians, Hmong etc.

but there are 300 million Indonesians alone. Combine that with malaysia, Brunei, Mindanao, and southern Thailand, and very obvious that the vast majority of south east Asian are Muslim.

Combine that with the 100s of millions of Muslims in China and central asia, and I think most Muslims are actually Asian, as in East Asian in appearance, but that's definitely not what most people would think.

another one of obama's great foreign policy achievements
He's really been a complete disaster when it comes to foreign relations...

Funding terrorists to overthrow Gaddafi and Assad which has lead to the biggest humanitarian crisis since WW2...By far one of the biggest disasters in American foreign policy history...Make no mistake about it the US under the Obama administration is 100% responsible for the mess in Syria and Lybia...

That horrid nonsensical Iran deal...

He brokered a deal with Cuba as a publicity stunt just so he can say "i'm the president that ended the embargo and brought back relations with Cuba"...The US got nothing from this deal (unless you're a billionaire Casino/Hotel builder) and the Cuban people are still suffering under a dictatorship...

And now we're losing vital strategic alliances in Asia...

Last but not least, he defended Sunni terror funding Saudis over the American people...:mindblown:
