Kinda with Perk on this one.

Some of these analysts put the 80s NBA on some godlike untouchable pedestal.

However, Perk did double down on it by saying that the 2004 Det squad was arguably the GOAT defensive team. That's def debatable....hence the word 'arguably'

04 Pistons were a great defensive team in the beginning of the era when the league allowed teams to play a soft zone defense. In the 80's the illegal defense rule still existed so that great defense would not translate in the 80's. 04 pistons didn't have the scoring to compete with any 80's champion.

They never talk about how great those 80s Pistons offenses were

They could hold you to 87 while putting up 115
Exactly. Plus part of the reason that 04 Pistons defense was so successful was they were right in the middle of the heaviest iso era in league history. You can't beat a great defensive team like that while Iso'ing. Compare it to the 80s Lakers or Celtics or Pistons who could pass the hell out of the ball, D you up, match size, and more scoring punch 1-5 than a lot of teams those 04 Pistons went against.

The real hot take is that I do think the 04 Pistons would give the 90s Bulls hell. I also think the 90s Bulls would beat all those 80s teams. It's a styles make fights type of deal.

The Ben/Rasheed era Pistons were interesting because outside of the '04 Finals (with all those circumstances going on with the Lakers) they were often shaky in the playoffs. Down 3-2 to the '04 Nets, down 3-2 to the '05 Heat, down 3-2 to the '06 Cavs.

They were fortunate Wade got hurt in '05 as they couldn't stop him then, and then in '06 a healthy Wade packed them up unceremoniously. Similarly, a mediocre LeBron team took them life n death because in a slowed-down halfcourt setting they could barely outscore donyell marshall, larry hughes ass types. And even with Larry Brown we saw those same struggles vs an '04 Nets team that didn't have a player on the stratesphere of Wade or Bron. That '04 Pacers team also didn't have offensive players like that.

So whether they could generate enough offense vs those 80s teams would be an issue. Even vs a 90s team like the early Bulls, Jordan would give them the same issue Wade did. Constant foul trouble and issues of whether they could score enough on the offensive end vs a very good Bulls defense.
