Financing a car is the worst decision a person can make. Unless you have a high income and a reasonable payment, buying a new car can set you back for years. In the past, car payments weren’t too crazy, but now people are paying $700+ a month, plus insurance, and the terms are getting longer and longer.

Something isn't adding up here.
Even if you know nothing about cars, you had to know that you took out a $40k loan to finance it. Which means you went to the dealership and were happy to pay $40k for that car or you paid the actual dealership price and pocketed the remainder of the loan.
Yeah I’m looking at it funny too. You should know the price of the car and move accordingly.

Buy a car new (if you plan on driving it till the wheels fall off) but make sure you got the financing, down payment etc., situated BEFORE going to the dealership. They want to focus on the monthly payment and will adjust the loan and contract terms to their favor while giving you a monthly payment you love.

Haggle on the total price of the car first. Have a number you'd be willing to pay and stick with it.

If u work from home now ever since covid
Changed everything, is there a point to even look at a new car.

People buying cars to impress people who don’t give 2 shyts about you and for u to feel good about someone saying nice looking car while u at the gas station

some people just need to buy their cars off craigslist from a private buyer for like 4K instead of getting into these financial agreements.
If you can't afford to pay cash, at least going to your bank for a 4k loan is cheaper than financing a car you can't even afford for twice it's worth.

Yeah. I put like 1300 miles on my car in the past year. It’s almost not worth keeping it, even though it’s paid for.

If you buy a car from some stranger, and the car breaks down, the repair bill would be worth more than the car itself. Its a money pit with no warranty.

Its not the 1970s anymore. Buying a car used doesn't mean its going to be a lemon. average car is good for over 150k miles now. back then anything over 60k was a bucket. Major repairs are unlikely and regular repairs aren't as expensive as people make them out to be.
replacing a timing belt or something is only going to cost like $300.
Besides even if you have to junk the whole car, buying another one for 4K only sets you back 8K total. Still 12K ahead of that 20K car. and 32K ahead if you got ripped off for a 20K car. Just avoid a car that has been in a wreck and you should have minimal maintenance bills.
