Blame the studio for being stupid enough to spend nearly 100 million on a western movie when no western has ever grossed more than 200 million domestic. It had the third biggest opening of a western movie ever and the sixth highest opening in September ever so for its genre it did good numbers and many attributed it to the star power involved (Denzel and Pratt front and center), but you just can't spend that kind of money on a western. So no one is putting that as a "flop" on Pratt's resume when he is widely considered one of the main reasons the movie even grossed what it did.
It flopped.

Chris pratt isn't the megastar a lister you claim he is.

Deal with it.

These are my two favorite actress right now along with Tom Hardy but I feel like I saw the whole movie because they show so much in the damned trailers

This movie looks shytty. I cringe every time I see the trailer. flop city from the trailers, not looking good.

this and assassin's creed both come out on December 21, and I got the feeling that they both flop. Passengers gotta 120 million budget, and Assassin Creed is said to be in the 150-200 million range. Any feelings on how Assassin Creed will do?

I'd say banking a 150 million blockbuster solely on Michael fassbender star power is a recipe for disaster

It might do average to just above average at best. Star Wars hype will carry into that weekend and beyond especially if the movie is well received both those flick finna flop.

What's this "supposed" first flop? The Magnificent Seven, which was a bland throwaway movie but still managed to become one of the top 10 highest grossing movies in a genre that has never had a movie made more than 200 million domestic?:jbhmm:

Regarding Passengers, I have no idea what to expect. Troubling production (the MOVA lawsuit) and strange (not necessarily bad, but strange) marketing decisions plus counter programming it against Rogue One that could easily go horribly wrong. Supposedly it's tracking "solidly" but at this point I feel like just falling back and doing a :hubie: whenever Sony is involved in a movie because there's just too much fukkery to get a clear picture.
La La land opens same day as Rogue one smfh

This movie doesn't look enjoyable at all. Seems like they just threw 2 hot at the moment actors and just tried to bank on that

But hateful eight was profitable. magnificent seven lost money.

And again, that's because the studio allowed the budget to balloon to an insane 90 million which is just not a realistic number for a western. Also, from what I read execs were pretty happy with the movie's profits and it's generally considered neither a flop nor a hit, simply falling into that big wide "unsensational" space in between of movies that did just fine enough.

Absolutely stupid to program that against Rogue One. I don't even know if betting on people to show up because Rogue One sold out but they still want to see a movie will work here. That might work for a smaller movie like La La Land which is true counter programming in the sense it literally aims for everyone not going to Rogue One plus doesn't have a high budget (@FlyRy ) but you can't bet on that on carrying any movie costing more than 100 million. That's the bigger risk then betting on Fassbender's "star power" (the franchise is the movie's selling point, not him).

More importantly, most prospects got Passengers beating AC that weekend which means that a 200 million dollar costing blockbuster might open up in third spot, possibly fourth even depending on how well Sing, a CGI animated kids movie also opening December 14th, will do.
