Urban Meyer always rewarded and encouraged ST over any other aspect of the team
He let the ST players get on and off bus and eat first at Florida and Ohio State
Brehs like Percy Harvin and Janoris Jenkins were begging to play ST
He also had more input and effort into recruiting defensive side of the ball than offense
He hired Dan Mullen (UF) and Tom Herman (OSU) to be the OCs and worry about the offense
Teams were always built to stop in-conf opponents from getting 25
All his dominant seasons were when he had formidable defense
OSU with 3 straight ranked to end 2014. Alabama had 14 in Q1, but scored only 14 more til 2mins left in the game. Oregon was obviously dominant
2008 Oklahoma set NCAAF record with most consecutive games averaging 60. Bradford won Heisman
This is how opponents fared against 08 Florida
If you wanted a coach who values D/ST, Meyer would be your guy
I have concerns about how well the stern disciplinarian approach to coaching kids translates to managing egos in a locker room of millionaire men, but he's always built his teams and had them prepared strongly in the areas we have been lacking in for 2 decades
Riley is the offensive guy and I feel his coaching style and approach would translate easier to the pros. He wouldn't necessarily be instilling an entire culture and revamping more than half the team. Riley would come in and put his fingerprints all over our offense, imo. But the defensive and ST fukkery would continue as long as Richard was here and Jerry didn't make drastic changes to ST.
