I think it's a bit hypocritical for people to casually dismiss people who drank "as an escape" because we all have our outlets. If your 90 minute workout at the gym is your way to de-stress, or your church group is your way to re-focus on what's important or your life, etc. etc. it's a bit ridiculous to knock individuals that use alcohol or drugs as their outlet of choice as a coping mechanism.
Too many sober cats feel their vices, outlets, and escapes are so morally righteous comparatively, and at the end of the day, what works for one person isn't always the choice or fit for another, and applying a level of relativity is truly misguided.
If something isn't your bag, then it isn't your bag. But speaking so directly and concretely towards certain outlets that reek of weakness or any other casually thrown about negative term is a cop-out.
