only 2 out of NFLs 32 teams had less than 3200 yards passing in 2015

Why is it a good thing?

Football is a complex game that has many facets. This trend makes the NFL (football at highest level) more one-dimensional. It's bad enough way more emphasis is placed on scoring that the defenses are faced with a huge handicap, but now the passing is getting skewed. As a result football is pushing more and more about qb and the rest, when the game is a team game about 22 men vs 22 men.

Why would anyone want to play an ILB nowadays? The pay is shyt, you're at a disadvantage most of the time (being on defense is already a disadvantage because of its reactive nature) , you're less popular than the qb even if you're elite and be isn't, and teams think you're replaceable enough.

The game is becoming a finesse far cry from the game I love. Maybe if you view football as pure entertainment and storyline bullshyt, its ok to you. It's not ok to me, I don't watch football for entertainment or bullshyt stories. I want to see a game played fairly. What I see is instead is pussification and penalize toon of football plays.

The whole concussion thing is a joke. Football is a physical sport. You will get hit hard. So is boxing. You will get hit hard. I'm fine with a qb or a high stature player being out for the year - that's how shyt is, football is physical. I don't care for clowns who watch for entertainment factor not getting entertained as a result of talent getting injured. Talented players getting injured is a part of the game of football. Trying to turn it into flag football is despicable.

Tune into espn Monday night and watch the team in crimson and white, you'll see what you want l. CFB the goat :blessed:
Have airing it out for folks who like that and heavy rub game for folk who like that. It has erreythang for erreybody :blessed:
Goat sport is for the people :blessed:

Nah this is different than just regular ebbs and flows. The rule changes and enforcement emphasis was clearly intended to steer the game in this direction. If it were cyclical, we could expect a renaissance of the running game in the coming years, but that's just not how the game is called anymore so, unless there are more changes in the rules and enforcement of those rules, we can expect this to continue.

My beef is that the game has been sanitized/standardized. Everyone runs similar playbooks, showing a personality is frowned upon, etc. It feels like Goodell wants his NFL to be like a fast food restaurant where the menu is the same and the ingredients are the same, and the product tastes the same no matter which location you go to in the country. The NFL product was at its best when individual teams and players had individual identities, but now in order to succeed, you have to all pretty much be good at the same things. Lame

The game needs a resurgence of the running game and great RBs so badly. It needs for DBs to play more physical without getting flagged every 3 plays. It needs for personal fouls to only be called when there are legit blows to the head or late hits or whatever, not just every time a hit "looks" violent (even if it's clean). It will alter everything from offensive strategy, defensive strategy, draft strategy, etc. It will allow teams known for running the ball and/or hard-hitting defense to actually succeed right along with high-flying passing offenses. And don't bring up Seattle - they never did shyt until they got a real QB.

Thank you teams don't have personalities anymore because everyone throws 40 times a game.

Back in the day you had contrasting styles and teams trying to enforce their will and style on the other ie Giants Niners in the 80's and giants bills Super Bowl etc

Now everyone throws it and it's way too easy to do so. You're a Steeler fan so I know you saw the Seahawk Steeler game this year. Watching that disgusted me it was more like a video game where guy were wr's were running free by 10 yards all the time.

Exactly. Teams each used to have their own brand of football that they tried to play and the very best teams were all capable of a deep passing game. Now everyone just throws dump off routes 40-50 times a game since you can't get physical with receivers and apparently teams are allowed to set picks on defensive backs. It's a watered down product. Even the Ravens with a practice squad caliber receiving corps were throwing the ball 63% of the time this year. Calling 50+ passing plays with that set of receivers and with Matt schaub under center. Didn't jimmy Clausen throw some 35+ times for Chicago against Seattle this year? Ryan Fitzpatrick shouldn't be throwing for 30+ touchdown passes on a season. Every game really does look like a game of madden.

Yeah.. and don't get me wrong, it was an exciting game with so many lead changes and shyt.. you had no idea who was gonna pull it out eventually.

But damn, the Hawks are supposed to have the best secondary and Ben treated them like a cheap whore. The Steelers used to have the #1 defense every damn year until they were completely made an example of. Tomlin finally stopped trying to fight gravity and said "fukk it, who cares if our defense sucks and we can't run the ball for shyt, we got Ben! :gladbron:"

But man, as a Steelers fan, it's hard to watch when Ryan Mallett completes 75% of his passes for 250 yards and 3 TDs without anyone even breathing on him the entire game. Not just because that shouldn't happen to anyone, but because the Steelers had an identity as an organization and they were forced to go away from it because it doesn't allow for winning football anymore. All it gets you now is 15 yard penalties and fines and shyt. The Rams are one of the only teams left that dominate you up front on defense and have an elite running game, but because their QB is :trash:, they can't even crack .500. I mean come on

Yep for sure, I've been saying for a few years that college football is the better product than the NFL. It's just that so many of us already have such strong emotional investments in the game, our teams, our players/coaches, fantasy, etc. that it's still addicting as fukk. But if we were just evaluating the quality of the product on the field objectively, college shyts all over the NFL. More common sense rules (like 15 yard PI instead of spot foul - totally ridiculous), teams have different identities and can recruit and succeed no matter what system they run, coaches really impact the game.

The Seahawks are the best defense of this era and gave up 5 td's and 400 plus yards to Brady in the Super Bowl

Your only shot to even slow offenses a little these days is a pass rush because you can't cover for too long anymore

Ben treats everyone like that. The Steelers passing offense is lethal. The Seahawks shut down the Broncos in the SB. Brady played better...it's the nature of the sport.

Vinny threw for 400 yards against the 2000 Ravens. Teams throw a lot more now but its not just bc of the rules.

I doubt Goodell has anything to do with it, really. While i hate that f@ggot too i feel like he gets blamed for way more things than he has direct influence/power over. Truth is the game is changing. Deal with it. People wanna see High scores.

From the perspective of someone who didnt grow up around football here is how i ssee it: Football as a sport can be a boring lowe-scoring game unless you tweak it. Wantexamples?
  • Why is a TD worth 6 points? Why isnt worth 1 or 2? You only scored 1 freakin TD so why do you get 6 points? Perhaps because TDs can be hard to score so you boost the per score points to make the score seem higher but a 14-7 game is just a 2-1 game IMO
  • Why is there an option for FG? THe objective of the game is to score TDs. In what sport can you fail to get to the goal and have the option to get half the points?
  • Why is ther an Extra point? How many sports can you score and be given the opportunity to add a littl emore to it?
I can go on and on with This. I know these points will seem corny to you but to an outsider thats what it feels like to watch the sport. But i understand that in general people (especially americans) love high scores and the leagues where scoring is loved (NBA, NFL) the leagues will make every adjustment possible to increase scoring as defenses get better and better. Thats just the way things are.

I hate Goodell with a passion too but the bottom line is the NFL is trying to appeal to the world market like the NBA and the "good ol' american" style football just isnt appealing to the demographics they are trying to get the money from. THe passing game makes it more exciting. So they'll tweak it even if it pisses you off because they know you wont leave. You're already hooked so he has no reason to do anything to appeal to you more. You're the housewife. But he sees the fine ass neighbor moving in all the sudden he's doing pushups out ont he lawn to impress her.

From 2003, well before football "jumped the shark"

So far, evidence would seem to suggest that establishing the run isn't really that important for winning games in today's NFL. The evidence also seems to back those who say that winning teams build their rushing totals while running out their leads. But in the interest of space, I've given a lot of top five and bottom five lists. What about the other 22 teams?

As it turns out, looking at all 32 teams together reinforces what we've seen so far: that more rushing attempts early don't indicate a winning team, but rushing attempts late do.

Statisticians have a concept called the correlation coefficient that measures how much one variable influences another variable. A correlation of 1 means the two variables are completely connected; 0 means they have no connection.

The correlation between first quarter rushing attempts and team wins is a measly .171. That means there is almost no connection between running a lot in the first quarter, and winning a lot of games. The correlation between fourth quarter rushing attempts and team wins, on the other hand, is .750. That's a sizeable relationship.

By the way, the correlation for first quarter rushing yards and team wins is a bit higher, though still not substantial, at .260. The correlation for fourth quarter rushing yards and team wins is a much lower, at .486. So early in games, it is more important to gain yards than just to run the ball for the heck of it, but at the end of the game the number of runs is more important than how many yards they gain.

To show how winning teams build their rushing statistics by running out the clock with a lead, here are the top ten NFL teams in rushing when a) leading by 14 or more in the third quarter, or b) leading by 7 or more in the fourth quarter. Along with the total yards they gained running out their leads, I've included what percentage of their total running game this represents, with the average of all 32 NFL teams being 15%.

Miami 552 yards 26%
Oakland 550 yards 36%
Philadelphia 540 yards 34%
Tampa Bay 422 yards 29%
Tennessee 348 yards 23%
New England 332 yards 25%
Denver 319 yards 16%
Green Bay 316 yards 18%
Pittsburgh 314 yards 20%
Atlanta 309 yards 20%

That's a pretty good list of wining football teams. Seven of these teams made the playoffs, and the other three went 9-7 and missed the playoffs by tiebreaker. But while all winning teams pad their rushing totals by running out the clock when leading late in games, those yards don't necessarily represent the same amount of the running game for all winning teams. Philadelphia and Oakland got more than one-third of their rushing yards while running out the clock, but Denver and Green Bay built much more of their rushing total earlier in games.

Incidentally, the playoff team with the fewest rushing yards in these "run out the clock" situations? Indianapolis, with only 93 yards: a mere 7% of their rushing total.

So in 2002, at least, the axiom that teams need to establish the run early to win did not hold true. Some teams won by running early. Other teams won without running early. It also appears that teams with high rushing totals aren't necessarily establishing their running game from the first snap onwards -- but when a winning football team has a high rushing total, it is very likely they got many of those yards while running out the clock.

The analytics guys finally realized passing the ball>>>>>>>running the ball in almost any situation and teams are going with that. Things like "establishing the run" is viewed as an antiquated way of thinking.
