Playing the game now

It’s a cool turn based jrpg with some nice unique features

Some things that I don’t like:
Cant pause cutscenes
The movement is too slow for my liking
When u break open a box for an item, u have to press O to break it, and the O again to take the item. Should just be one press

The only problem I have with this game is the fight battle is too damn easy and there's no change in difficulty settings. so I thought the boss fight gonna be hard but nope, it's still too damn easy, it's easy to win. I loved turned-based jrpg but it's too damn easy. I want challenge, a hard battle, tough, etc.

Is the story actually original/new or is it mostly slightly different retellings of previous stories?

Game is also very strict and doesn’t let you explore. You can’t stray too far away from the objective point or you’ll be forced back

Yeah, you have to finish some main mission first before you do explore which pissed me off. I felt like this is not a fully open world
yeah that's disappointing. There's also too much start and stop. After a cutscene, you move for about 20 more seconds, and then another cutscene

not only that, there's a ton of backtracking. I'm in alabasta, and i have had to go back and forth between areas multiple times, which makes my complaint about the slow movement even worse. the R2 speed should have been the default, and there should have been a level above that. Ideally, the sprint speed in Pirate Warriors 4 would have been used again here

There also seems to be no "defend" or "guard" option in battle. So when you are in a Dramatic Scene and the condition is "have X beat the enemy", you pretty much have to use items and resources so you don't kill the enemy without the character that would fulfil the condition.

Lastly, the map system is pretty mediocre for an RPG. since you cant place waypoints like every RPG has done since 2007, you have to constantly press the touch pad to bring up the map to make sure you're on the right track for whatever you wanna see if it's out of the scope of the mini-map on the bottom-left of the screen

These are small things that I feel like every RPG should have, and it's disappointing that this game doesn't have those basic features, especially considering the game was pushed back :francis:

I’m one of those people that will choose a bad dub over subtitles, unless its like a Korean or japanese movie. I just dont want to stay focused on the bottom half the screen while im actively playing the game, especially since these characters have little conversations back and forth while you’re traversing the map.

I do the same when I binge anime, i just prefer the dub

I prefer dub also. I'm replaying through Yakuza 0 and reading all the subtitles is driving me nuts

I'm losing interest in this game. I just finished alabasta and idk if i wanna do 3 more arcs of this :francis:

game is slow as hell, movement wise. It's killing me. How did the developers think it was okay for the characters to move THIS slowly? :mindblown:

EDIT:

Here's a list of things off the top of my head that i dont like:
-painfully slow movement
-lots of back-tracking
-when an enemy spots you, you have to run away. If the character you're playing as had an action function to hit the enemy as he's running toward you to still get an advantage in the battle, that would be great. but ofc that's not a feature
-can't pause during cutscenes OR when a character is talking at all. that's just terrible game design
-no "defend" option in battles, which makes you pretty much have to waste healing items as filler to get to the character you want to use to beat the enemy in a given Dramatic Scene scenario. The "defend" option also could've given you a small TP boost
-No way to adjust the difficulty
-side quests are very boring, and again, with all the backtracking, it's a chore to finish (Example: the "photograph" side mission)
-Luffy's observation Haki is almost useless outside of finding enemies with more exp
-You have to switch characters to use their special abilities. This was like in Gen1 pokemon games where if you had to use an HM outside of battle, you had to open up the menu, and select the pokemon with the HM to use it. That was quickly changed in Gen2 onward by just pressing A on a boulder or pressing A near the water to activate the command. This game makes you open the menu, switch to the correct character, then use the move to get the item. For example, you should just press A near an iron box, and Zoro would cut it open. That's pretty simple game design that the developers should have done in 2023
-If you break open a box or item, you have to press O to break it and then press O again to take the item. It should just be one O press to break open the box and take the item
-game allows very little exploration. Stray too far from the main objective and the game will force you back within the area. The screen also goes black for a sec and you are turned around. I feel like u could save time by just turning the character around
-It's EXTREMELY easy to hoard money in this game. You will probably NEVER find yourself strapped for cash. Everything is pretty cheap and you get a lot of money from beating grunt enemies and bosses

This game was PUSHED BACK from its original release date, and they still missed a ton of quality-of-life changes

This is just from playing the game up to alabasta. I feel like the developers should've caught at least SOME of these if they played for about 90 minutes :francis:

If u really wanna play this game, i'd wait until it's on sale tbh. And even then, with all the other games coming out this month and February, i'd just skip it. Its a 6/10 for me

Finished the game

It was perfectly fine. didn't love it enough to do any postgame stuff

They make u sit through the entire credits (cant skip it) to get the trophy for finishing the game. meh. wont play again, and wouldnt recommend even if it's on sale :francis:

onto another game

Side note: to those who are playing the game, u get Brook later in the game, but he has an ability called "New World" that gives the whole team an Attack Boost. It stacks indefinitely. Most i got in a fight was +8 So u can just keep using that to buff the other 3 characters ATK power and beat the bosses pretty easily

@Gizmo_Duck you have too much faith in these anime games
Unless it's dbz or Naruto the game probably gonna be mid
