In India they take tourists on tours riding on elephants right up to tigers, because tigers won't mess with them at all.
It is true that a king cobra or a gaboon viper can kill an elephant with venom. But it's really tough to get the right bite through the skin - they have to get lucky. And even then, there's a good chance the elephant won't die. Whereas with one step it's pretty certain the elephant will easily kill the snake.
