Why would anyone come after him he's right. Old school is one of the most stupid moves in history and nobody even bothered to provide a plausible explanation for why guys just stood there and let him do it.
Well, if I may play Devil's Advocate here, look at it this way.

Undertaker is a 300+ pound man with supernatural strength and abilities. Now he's got you gripped in an arm wringer and while gripped tight, he ascends the ropes adding pressure to the hold via the angle and height. Now if you push him out of the ring, he will take your arm with him and you're looking at a tear. And to pull him from the top rope you'd have to overpower him and only Batista in his prime was THAT strong.

It's not perfect, it takes a little time and suspension but it CAN work.

Even if we give the first part of the move the benefit of the doubt (the arm wring and dragging you to the corner) You could just kick his leg out as he ascends to the top rope. He has to climb one leg at a time he's not levitating up so he's especially vulnerable there, you could cut that shyt off there and then every single time. Especially because you're WATCHING him climb up. Just isolate the standing leg when he lifts the other leg up to climb the turnbuckle and kick him in the knee repeatedly, problem solved. He won't make it to the top rope and potentially rip your arm out of its socket by falling off.
