SANTA CLARA, Calif. --
NaVorro Bowman's comeback from his gruesome left knee injury suffered in the NFC title game in January 2014 reached a crescendo Friday as the
San Francisco 49ers inside linebacker was named first-team All Pro by the Associated Press.
The
Carolina Panthers'
Luke Kuechly was the other first-team inside linebacker while the
Seattle Seahawks'
Bobby Wagner and the
Kansas City Chiefs'
Derrick Johnson were named second-team All-Pro at inside linebacker.
Bowman, 27, led the NFL with 154 tackles, ahead of
Indianapolis Colts linebacker D'Qwell Jackson (150),
Tampa Bay Buccaneerslinebacker
Lavonte David (147),
Miami Dolphins safety
Reshad Jones (135) and
Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker
Paul Posluszny(133).
After the Niners’ season finale, a 19-16 overtime victory against the
St. Louis Rams, Bowman was asked to reflect on his comeback season and how much it meant to still play at a high level.
“It meant a lot,” he said. “To get out there and move the way I was moving prior to the injury and receive the respect I’ve received from players throughout the league continued to motivate me and drive me. I didn’t get down on the missed tackles that I made. I had several missed tackles this year where I felt I could have made them but I didn’t.
"Guys were still pushing me and saying that I was doing a good job. All of those things continue to drive me to fight throughout the year.”
There were times where Bowman appeared to miss his lateral speed and movement, but they were steps that precious few other NFL linebackers possessed in the first place.
Bowman, who should be a top contender for the NFL's comeback player of the year award with Kansas City Chiefs defensive back
Eric Berry and
Arizona Cardinals quarterback
Carson Palmer, also had 2½ sacks with a forced fumble and two passes defensed.
“Probably since Week 8 I’ve put the pressure on myself to go into this offseason and get back to the form I was once at,” he said, “and this body will be put through a tremendous workout every single day.”
