What's so special about April 1st?
if Kaep was on the 49ers roster on april 1st (he was), he was guaranteed full salary; I think its around an extra ~10m cap hit for 2016.

this is why it doesnt make much sense from FO. they just lost money for no reason really.

I thought as much. So what happens when Kaepernick goes to another team, he takes his 12 mill and restructures*?

That's the problem, Denver wants him to give up 6 mil of guaranteed money

I wouldn't do it

Me neither but he is stuck. Either he restructures and goes to Denver or he has to go back to that locker room and deal with his teammates not to mention the media shytstorm that will follow him everywhere.

His agent is a buffoon.

I think Denver wants the Niners to foot some of the bill for the contact this season. The restructure would effect next season and beyond.

Kap would be a fool to restructure though. You have a small window to make money in this league and you do yourself a disservice by taking less money in your prime. If Denver wants him bad enough then he should make them commit, not rent.

I don't think going back into the locker room would be that tough if you're making your full contract...you just have to suck it up and play. Be a professional and do your job.

If a deal isn't done today then he'll have to report tomorrow because he has a $400k workout bonus.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
Don't leave Kaep :(
for real. I mean goff. Gabbert

Get all the way the fukk out of here with that. Chip knows he don't want that shyt neither. He called 49ers for this job, they never called him. There was 1 reason for that and that was the qb

On a good note tho. It doesn't look like this shyt is happening anyway. Why the hell would we pay 5 million for him to play on the Broncos

There is a deal in place that would send Colin Kaepernick to the Denver Broncos, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, but haggling over the salary of the quarterback has kept the San Francisco 49ers from pulling the trigger. While Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk called it a "real stretch" to say that a deal has been reached between the two teams, Schefter says "it would take two seconds" if the two teams can agree which one will pay Kaepernick's $11.9 million salary.

Denver has offered to pay $7 million of the salary, but the remaining $4.9 million is reportedly the sticking point. The Broncos don't want to pay the rest and want the 49ers to front some of the bill, while San Francisco doesn't want to spend money on a player it trades away.

The Broncos made a push to try and get the young quarterback at the end of March, as Kaepernick and John Elway met on Thursday, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Kaepernick asked the 49ers for a trade and his agents received permission to seek one. An early report said that the 49ers and Broncos have decided on the compensation, and restructuring the quarterback's contract is the task at hand now. But it's been some time since that early report, and a lot has happened, including Kaepernick getting his base salary guaranteed for 2016 even if he is traded. The only way to prevent his 2016 team from paying him $11.9 million in base salary is to re-do his contract.

Kaepernick has had an odd career trajectory thus far, and what happens next is one if the more interesting questions of the offseason. Kaepernick was the quarterback of the future for the 49ers, and when Jim Harbaugh made the switch from Alex Smith to him, he quickly became the franchise quarterback of the present.

Kaepernick was explosive and dangerous, and that served the 49ers well for a couple seasons, until things started to unravel in 2014, Harbaugh's final season with the franchise. It only got much, much worse from there. Jim Tomsula took over as head coach and Kaepernick's quarterbacks coach from his down 2014 season, Geep Chryst, became his offensive coordinator.

The result was disastrous. Kaepernick hardly looked like he'd be able to find success in college, let alone the NFL, and completely regressed at fundamental aspects of playing the position. He was benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert and the rumors suggested Kaepernick's relationship with the 49ers was fractured.

But then the team brought in Chip Kelly, perhaps one of the only coaches in the league who could possibly rehabilitate Kaepernick and use him properly. Now things are interesting. Kaepernick has a high cap hit, is coming off a bad year and nobody knows for certain whether the 49ers want him or if he wants them. Enter the rumors!

Yea, I don't think Kaep is going anywhere, he's not cutting his paycheck in half, even if it is to play for the Broncos. The fact of the matter is, he is in a funky position from a career standpoint, he's not going to get another huge payday in his career, and he's going to make the most money by staying. He owes to himself to at least see how he can function in a Chip Kelly ran offense, and consider his options the next season.

Jesus Tap Dancing Christmas. The remaining thing is them paying $4.9 million?????

What in the natural fukk? So their decision is to trade him and only pay 4.9 OR Keep him and pay the full 11.9 so they're choosing to keep someone they don't want when they have enough cap room to buy the Raiders right now???

Every team has to spend a minimum amount of money and I believe if they trade him then will fall below that # so they will have to go out and spend $ on complete bums
