Mario Still the King of the Mushroom Kingdom; Weekend Box Office Results (Apr. 14-16)

The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues to make unbelievable amounts of money. This weekend saw it make $87 million. A 40.6% decline? That's an incredible hold. It's crazy because when I was reading Deadline's box office article on Friday, they had it doing $59 million and then, in the afternoon, it jumped to $72 million. Yesterday morning they had it doing $80 million and then, in the afternoon it jumped up to $87 million. :whew:

Mario just had the 9th biggest 2nd weekend ever, just behind Top Gun: Maverick's $90 million. Its $39.1 million Saturday was the 6th biggest 2nd Saturday ever. It also became the 15th fastest movie to gross $300 million. It actually beat out Top Gun: Maverick which was the 17th fastest to cross the plateau. Add it all up and you have a movie that is now made $347.8 million domestically and $677.9 million worldwide.

Russell Crowe's, The Pope's Exorcist debuted in second place with $9.1 million. It's $850K in Thursday previews was actually $50K less than Renfield's $900k. The power of Crowe compelled audiences to like it more than Renfield which is evidenced by its 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes to Renfield's 81% score. It was the same overseas as It pulled in $27.4 million. Who knew?

Aight so surely Renfield debuted in 3rd place, right?

the-mandalorian-grogu.gif

That would be John Wick: Chapter 4 with another $7.9 million. It's now crossed $160.1 million domestically. It's at $349.7 million worldwide. Under the table is where s*** gets done and where millions gets made. :wow:

Now we finally arrived at Renfield debuting in fourth place with $7.77 million. with this being a Universal movie making under $50 million, it'll be on premium video on demand in 14 days. I already cited the Rotten Tomatoes numbers in The Pope's Exorcist section, but Renfield only got to B- CinemaScore. Not what you're looking for. Internationally it only brought in $2.2 million. It's only total of $10 million. And this is what the production budget of $86 million. :picard:

The Count just beat out Mike, as Air took 5th place with $7.72 million. :mjcry: Its now crossed $33.2 million domestically and $54 million worldwide.

Toni Collette had herself a nice weekend. She has The Power series on Prime Video and Mafia Mamma debuted in 7th place with $2 million. Wanted to get up in this broad since I saw her in Shaft back in the day. :manny:

Sweetwater opened with $350K from 1,204 theaters. It debuted in 11th place.

The Ari Aster-Joaquin Phoenix joint, Beau Is Afraid, debuted with $320K from 4 theaters.

Violent Night is still in theaters. It just did $4K in its 20th weekend. :leon: It's up to $50.05M.

I'll mirror a little bit of what I said in the other thread, but Renfield was a fun ride and despite the bomb, the kind of film I can see becoming beloved in the horror community down the road. Been seeing comments through social media like "The trailer didn't do it justice!" or "It wasn't marketed well enough."...This movie could get the best trailer EVER and would still bomb.

The Nicholas Cage meme culture on the internet, while I love it, does not translate into interest amongst majority of the general audience when it comes to seeing his movies in theaters.

On another note, Nicholas Hoult is on a roll. I remember when this dude was on Skins and it's wild seeing him moving up. Lost out on roles in The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick, but will be in MI: Dead Reckoning and Egger's Nosferatu. :wow:

I had some interest in Renfield, but the mixed reviews had me feeling I can wait for Peacock. Not sure why it cost $65 million.

Mario should be number 1 until Guardians comes out in May.

Not a bad movie at all. My son and every kid in the theater loved it. Had a lot of cool familiar callbacks from OG Marios. And when Yoshi’s egg popped up after the end credits, you would’ve thought John Cena returned at Royal Royal 2008 the way the kids reacted :laff:

Evil Rises but The Super Mario Bros. Ain't Dead Yet: Weekend Box Office Results (Apr. 21-23)

The Super Mario Bros. Movie just cannot be stopped. It's $59.9 million is the biggest 3rd weekend for an animated movie. It's now reached $436 million domestically. It's also now Universal's third highest grossing movie ever, surpassing Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's $417.7 million. It did in 19 days what Fallen Kingdom did in 105. :damn: Next up? E.T.'s $439.2 million, which will fall once today's numbers are updated tomorrow. Oh yeah, it's made $875 million worldwide. :whew:

smg4-fist-bump.gif

Debuting in second place with an impressive $24.5 million was Evil Dead Rise, which i will be seeing tomorrow. Not bad for a movie that was supposed to debut on HBO Max. 2013's Evil Dead debuted with $25.7 million in 3,025 theaters. And that movie ended up making $54.2 million domestically. How about a more contemporary comparison? Smile opened in 3,650 theaters and made $22.6 million and route to $105.9 million. It did that with a B- CinemaScore Evil Dead Rise is rocking a solid B. So if It has the same legs as Smile, it'll finish with $114.9 million. :leon:

How about M3GAN? It had the same B cinemascore and opened with $30.4 million from 3,509 theaters and finished with $95 million. The Black Phone debuted with $23.6 million from 3,150 theaters and finished with $90.1 million. So the average of those three horror movies is $97 million. I would expect Evil Dead Rise to make no less than $94.9 million and legitimately threaten $100 million. Hopefully my prediction doesn't have me end up with the maggots. :whoa:

mommys-with-the-maggots-with-the-maggots-now.gif

We got another new movie taking third place that would be Guy Ritchie's The Covenant with $6.3 million. This movie comes on the heels of Ritchie's Operation Fortune from last month, which opened with $3.1 mill from 2,168 theaters. Fortune had a B+ CinemaScore and The Covenant has an A so word of mouth should be better. It just missed out on passing Operation Fortune's 6.4 million total gross, which was only in theaters for 3 weeks before it hit streaming. So it's a night and day difference financially between these two. And from the trailer, it looks to me like Iron Man, only Tony Stark has to save Yinsen instead of him perishing in that cave on his way to see his family. :ehh:

giphy.gif

I'm telling you, that's @Ironman right there.

John Wick: Chapter 4 continues to outpace the holdovers. Its $5.8 million was enough to take fourth place. It's running total is $168.9 million, just $2.1 mill away from passing Chapter 3's franchise best $171 million. :wow:

wait-keanu-reeves.gif

Dungeons & Dragons rounded out the top 5 with $5.5 million. It's closing in on $90 million; It's made $82 mill so far domestically and $178 worldwide. Can it inch its way to 100 million?

Beau Is Afraid expanded to 965 theaters and made $2.8 million.

Chevalier debuted in 1,275 theaters and only pulled in $1.5 million. And that's with an 81% fresh on the tomato meter. :francis:

The Stage adaptation of Spirited Away made $700K on Sunday. :lupe:

Avatar: The Way of Water was resurgent with $583K as it upped its theaters count by 760.

S C R E A I
VI fell out of the top 10 for the first time as it finished in 17th place with $497K. It's now up to $107.7M.

Evil Dead Rise sitting comfy next to Smile and Barbarian as films that turned out successful after initially being intended as streaming exclusives. Movie was fun. I think the long wait we’ve had since Fede’s remake was beneficial in it feeling fresh to the general audience despite the story not being as grand of a journey like 2013’s. This franchise drops their movies like how Boards of Canada be dropping their albums. I’ll take what I can get and enjoy it. :pachaha:

Traditional horror for the most part has been doing great lately though and I’m sure the studios aren’t losing much sleep since most of these projects are fairly low budget. :ehh:
