So…whose idea was it to put a Book Club sequel against Guardians? :dead:

Counter-programming :manny:. The audience for that movie isn't hyped to see a talking racc00n or space creatures :skip:

Great to see Guardians hold up. Gunn restoring the feeling :ehh:, until Vin Diesel and la familia pulls up for Number 1 this weekend with Fast X.

You’d be surprised. And I honestly think the audience for that were too busy being dragged along by their kids and grandkids to Guardians.

Older audience is less likely to go to theaters as well, and just catch it on streaming.

A Not so 'Fast Ten'-t-Pole Still in Pole Position: Weekend Box Office Results (May 19-21)

Throw on your best wife beater. Join the fam and kick back with an ice cold Corona Extra sans lime cuz that's how they do it in the Fast and Furious movies. :hhh: the 11th movie in the franchise and the 10th main line entry, Fast X, is here and it's the number one movie in North America with $67.5 million. That's just $2.5 million shy of 2021's, Fast 9's $70 million opening. That's really not bad for a franchise that is seen diminishing returns since the glory days of Furious 7. :ehh: It's also rocking the same exact B+ CinemaScore that moviegoers gave F9 and that movie finished its run with $719.3 million globally.

But this franchise is always been carried by the overseas totals and they were immense. With $251.3 million coming internationally, the global opening was a whopping $318.8 million. That's the second best global opening of the year behind Universal's Super Mario Bros. So that's that's two wins for Universal here. It's the top international opening for the year and the second best opening overseas for a Fast and Furious movie.

That's the good news. Now the bad news. This movie had a $340 million production budget. :dwillhuh: The previous high in the franchise? $250 million which belonged to the Fate of the Furious. F9 had a miniscule, dare I say, responsible $200 million budget. :ohhh:

The other bad news? Next week. The last time a Fast and Furious movie did not finish number one in its second weekend was 2011's Fast Five. We can go ahead and add Fast X to the list because The Little Mermaid will knock this m*********** off.

Another strong hold for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with $31.9 million. It was down 48.4% in its third weekend, just behind Volume 2's 46.9% hold. Vol. 3's $266.5 million trails Vol. 2's $301.3 by 11.5% after 3 weeks. It's $659.1 million global gross is damn near $200 million more than Quantumania's $475.9 million. :picard:

gotggame-gotgthegame.gif

Taking third place was The Super Mario Bros. Movie with $9.8 million. It's thiiiiiis close to crossing $550M domestically. It's currently running at $549.2M, passing 2019's The Lion King and its $543.9M, to become the 14th highest grossing movie ever at the domestic box office.

Score one for the greaseballs.:mjpls:

Book Club: The Next Chapter held off Evil Dead Rise, with $3M to finish in 4th place. Its $13.1M running total is less than Book Club's opening weekend total of $13.5M. :wow: The sequel fell off by 55.1% from last week compared to the original's 25.8%. :banderas:Book Club grossed $104.4M worldwide? :ohhh: Damn. Diane Keaton rolling over in her grave. :deadrose:

We are NOT watching THIS either. :banderas:

Evil Dead Rise continues to hold steady with another 3.7 million and finishes in the top five for the 5th weekend in a row. It's now up to $64.1M domestically, just behind A Man Called Otto's $64.2M and Cocaine Bear's $64.3M, the former the 13th and latter the 12th highest grossing movies this year. Its $135.6M makes it the 9th highest growth grossing movie of the year worldwide. :ehh:

Notables

The John Wick franchise has now grossed $1B worldwide. Chapter 4's $427M running worldwide total is nearly $100M clear of Chapter 3's $327.2M. The fukkin Babayaga. And shout out to Lance Riddikk for his invaluable contributions to the franchise. :wow:

The Glenn Howerton aka @RennisDeynolds starring Blackberry finished in the top 10 with a $525K 2nd weekend total. I remember watching the always Sunny podcast some months ago and Glenn had the top of his head shaved now we know that it was for this movie, from IFC Films, which has grossed $1.2M.

You right, Wally. Boy, it sure is a hot one. :skip:

Dungeons & Dragons is now on Paramount+. Its $92.8M is makes it the 10th highest grossing movie of the year, dangerously close to knocking off M3GAN'S $95M. I'ma check it out. I've heard good things.

Like what?

Anyway, Fast X had the second biggest opening of the year so far with $319M worldwide. This franchise continues to print money.
Means nothing in the grand scheme of things with a $440 million dollar budget and diminishing overseas returns. They are going to have to reign in Vin's ego and creative control as a lot of this film was wasteful spending due to his issues on set. If you don't think that those overseas numbers are going to down, then look at the previous releases.

A few months ago I cracked a joke on here saying how Vin basically showed up with a new actor on set to add to the film everyday and that's going have to change.

It'll be fine. Even if it doesn't break even in the theater run it's going to be close enough to the point where TV contracts and digital sales push it over. They should have filmed them back to back. It would have saved money.

That budget is still going to have to go down for the next film. Even if they filmed it back to back there's still the issue of Vin's ego that needs to be put in check or else he'll chase away the next director and cause $1 million dollars to be wasted everyday they don't have one.

I don't think they should do a much rumored "trilogy". I think they have plenty of juice for one more and end it there but two more is greed

The film doesn’t have enough juice for a third film IMO and why I assumed that Vin was just kidding. If he wasn’t, then Universal is going to make the decision for him.

lol at Vin going into business for himself by raising this “rumor” about a third film. Universal looking at his ass like, “Alright, cut it out!” :martin:

Definitely feels like the second film should be the “Endgame” of the two. Anything beyond that is :why:

In that case, Paul Walker GOTS to be brought back for the final final film. No two ways about it :wow:
