I don't know if people hated her, not quite old enough to have noticed her at the time she was younger.

People are always hard on women as if we are nothing beyong your face/t*ts/ass. She was/is a great actress who didn't have to rely on her (good or bad) looks to bring a role/character to life.

I feel you on all of that, but folk used to go in unfairly on Whoopi something serious back in the day. It also didn't help when she started fukking with Ted Danson and other white dudes and was labelled a Wench and all that. Her acting was never in question 'cause she brought it many a film as you said, but...some folk used to act like she was straight up "Ugga Mugga" status back then, it was cold.

Whoopi whole style was to be respected on her talent and not sex appeal. Plus to many folks white, black, men and women just couldn't see her as a love interest in a film. To them she just didn't have any sex appeal and real talk some folks rather famous or not just lack sex appeal.

Folks forget that she had a sex scene in a movie and it tested so bad with black and white audiences that it had to be removed.

Second I don't believe it was about her complexion. I remember young and older kats being in love with dark skin sistas like tyra ferrell, phyllis yvonne stickeny (who my dad was in love with) and patra.

While she was young I personally don't think she was that “ugly ugly” but she definitely wasn't an attractive woman...ya know the type to give you an instant hard-on but there was times in a few movies where she looked okay (like that blue dress scene in Jumping Jack Flash)...so respectfully speaking if I had to rate her I'd say she's a 4-4½ outta 10.
