This could have easily been "80 yr old man killed after coming home, police looking for suspects"

I think sympathy for criminals is a American thing, these people weren't some random bystanders killed in cold blood, these were criminals committing a criminal act.

But wouldn't a simple autopsy investigate her claim? That's why he shouldn't have talked to the media to begin with.

He kept running his mouth and at the end of the story shot at someone who ran away and no longer was a threat. If this goes to court, that could be used against him.
