They'd still be on the hook for paying Perk, so they may as well have been paying luxury tax.
Now if your argument is to keep Harden and trade Ibaka (and then still getting rid of Perk), now you have no bigs and you're paying Harden max money to still come off your bench. There's a huge flaw in that design (and had they done that, we'd have the same criticisms of the Thunder had Ibaka been dealt and been the defensive force he is on another team)

I think the Perkins trade was the marriage of where sports reputation (he's a winner/The Celtics couldn't win without him) meets ability (average to below average center) forces a team into acquiring a player.

In fairness there is some truth to the "sports reputation" shyt in the NBA.
