I thought there was some deal where he was suppose to get the rights once the book went out of print( none of the characters are technically legacy characters) but it became so popular that DC kept reissuing collections and keeping the rights because it was so popular.

What @Json says is also true, that's what soured his relationship with DC, but regarding his movie royalties, that's where the LXG drama comes in.

This looks interesting to me in the same way 'Westworld' does. High production value expansion of an existing property, that didn't really need it.

They'll eat well off people looking for ties to the books/movies.
