I don't know what to tell you.

It genuinely makes more sense to me watching this show, knowing the book. The squid was created by Jeremy Irons' character to basically simulate an alien attack and bring humanity together.

There's whole storylines that Snyder left out of his adaptation. I know the 'Tales Of The Black Freighter' got a half assed animated release after the fact, but it makes more sense if it's in the body of the narrative. It's things like that which made Alan Moore believe it was unfilmable. You could argue the same about V For Vendetta.

Warner could have made great bingeable shows out of both of them if they'd been able to hold off maybe 5 or 6 years.

They released the Director's Cut of Snyder's movie and it's like 4 hours long with the Black Freighter stuff placed in. Snyder did a good ass job adapting the novel, only difference was the ending which isn't a big deal
