Wouldn't surprise me at all if the Manhattan reveal is a fake out and he is never explicitly shown in the show.

I was thinking something similar. I think the "recording" of Dr. Manhattan on Mars is a fake, and they'll save his reveal until the last moment of the second-to-last episode.
