The scenario I presented could happen only if the US attacks Iranian soil. If that happens the gloves are off. The thing is it could potentially happen. Iran will respond via their proxies and Trump has said he will strike Iran is a US servicemen is killed. Iran’s deterrence has been to make the cost of war so high that in the end the US will have gained nothing.

To me this strike has changed the existing calculus for Iran. I think they will find it very difficult to retaliate proportionately, or in a high profile manner, while keeping cost of American retaliation limited.
