Iran will respond if they don’t they will be perceived weak to their proxies who will lose faith in them. The tanker explosions, the Aramco attacks, the shootdown of the US RQ-4 UAV are all examples of spectacular Iranian actions, and none were in such serious circumstances. They will likely strike back at the US in Iraq and or Afghanistan using their proxies.

I disagree with this. How many times has Israel bombed IRGC and its assests in Syria over the past couple of years? How many times have they responded? Ditto for the Muginiyeh example. Did their proxies lose faith because of that approach? They are interlinked and fully aware that Iran is their only benefactor.

There was plausible deniability for the Aramco and tanker attacks and none of the three lead to casualties to U.S. personnel. Similar attacks are certainly possible, but thats a lot different than open season on U.S. forces in Iraq. They are acutely aware that they can only fight asymetrically and that risking a response in Iran would destabilize their regime.
