Now a PG-13 joint?

Venom Will Likely Be a Hard PG-13 Rather than Rated R

"According to Variety, “some members of Sony’s brain trust believe that the film should push the very limits of PG-13 without crossing over into a higher rating.” The thinking appears to be that a PG-13 rating will “will give the studio greater leeway for future installments that will feature Spider-Man” as well as other members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

'Venom' Director Not Sure If Film Will Get R Or PG-13 Rating

With questions about whether Sony's Venom will get a PG-13 or R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, even those directly involved with the film do not seem to think there is a clear answer.

Initially reports were that Venom would target an R rating and go for a largely-untapped audience for superhero movies -- the people who went to see Deadpool in droves. Later, word came down that Sony was hoping for a PG-13 Rating, in order to reach the broadest possible audience.

In the latest issue of Total Film, director Ruben Fleischer and star Tom Hardy both weighed in on where the MPAA might land and why, and after reading both quotes it is difficult to say exactly what kind of movie they made.

"We're curious to see where it'll land," said Fleischer. "But we pushed the envelope as far as we possibly could in terms of just making it the most true to the comics version of the film that we could. He's a character that goes around biting people's heads off and eating brains. So we tried to respect that as much as we could."

Fleischer's quote makes it sound like biting people's heads off and eating brains is Venom's standard operating procedure, which most comic book fans will know is not the case. The idea that Venom eats brains comes from one of his early appearances, in which he lunged at Spider-Man and screamed "I'm going to eat your brain." Later, in Venom: the Hunger, Venom actually does eat someone's brain (off-panel), and then runs away, Eddie Brock taking over from the parasite and narrating to the audience that this is not what he normally does, but something he had always said to scare people. It was eventually revealed that a chemical in the human brain nourishes the symbiote, but that Brock typically prevents it. Given the trailers playing up the struggle for control between Hardy and the symbiote, it would not be surprising to see some version of that story incorporated into the film.

Of course, as Comics Should Be Good noted in their look at the question, the Mac Gargan Venom would eat people fairly often -- brains and all.

All that aside, the whole "biting off people's heads" element feels a lot like something that would necessitate, or at the very least lend itself, to the R-rating. Listening to the film's star, though, is a little different.

"You want to reach as big an audience as possible with one of these movies, because they're good fun," Hardy said. "My son steered me onto Venom. There would be things I would probably cover his eyes for. It depends how sensitive a nine-year-old's parents are. It's not my place to say. I don't really know what [rating] they're going to give it. But, it can pivot to either/or, if that makes sense. The IP lends itself to gore, and it also lends itself to a black comedy action thriller, as well."

Venom stars Tom Hardy (Venom/Eddie Brock), Michelle Williams (Anne Weying), Jenny Slate, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Lee (Donna Diego), Riz Ahmed (Dr. Carlton Drake), Sope Aluko (Dr. Rosie Collins), and Reid Scott.

Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters on July 5, 2019.

'Venom' Director Says Film's Level Of Violence Will Be Pushed To The Hilt

The violence in Sony's Venom movie will set it apart from other super hero movies according to director Ruben Fleischer.

While the film is just over a month from release and does not yet have an official MPAA rating, Fleischer's recent comments might just hint towards one which allows for more grotesque freedoms. Fleischer said the violence in his upcoming film will be "pushed to the hilt," meaning it will be supplied to the maximum degree.

“I feel like the casting, the aesthetic and the character himself all combine to make something that just feels different,” Fleischer told LA Times. “Tonally it doesn’t remind you of other movies. It doesn’t feel like we just tried to do what everyone else is doing…. The DC universe is so aggressively dark and the Marvel universe has become so light. It was kind of exciting to craft something that just felt a little bit more real and grounded and in our world.”

Speaking to ComicBook.com at San Diego Comic Con, Fleischer teased more specifically what some of the differences between Venom and the other super hero properties will be. Given Venom's terrifying nature in comics, the movie aims to be consistent with the Marvel pages.

"That's the plan," Fleischer said. "It is not the plan, that's the movie. Our movie wants to honor the comics as close as we can tonally. In the comics, he bites people's heads off and eats brains. It would be weird to make a movie with Venom if he wasn't doing that. We tried to honor it as closely as possible. This is definitely a darker, more violent, more vicious Marvel character than I think anyone's ever seen before."

In the end, it was important to honor the comics while crafting a story which will keep moviegoers guessing. "We really want to honor the comics and the character from the comics and I feel like we did a really good job," Fleischer said.

It was also important to Venom star Tom Hardy.

"Venom is, by far, for me the...coolest Marvel super hero that there is," Hardy said during the movie's Hall H panel. "I just like the way he looks first and foremost. Then, also, there's my son and he's a massive Venom fan. He was a very strong influence on me as to why I ought to play Venom specifically...So I did something where I bite people's heads off which my son can't see."

Expect a final ruling on the film's MPAA rating, be it PG-13 or R, sooner rather than later. Venom is set for release on October 5, 2018.

I could be wrong but the more I hear this dude talk the more I think he just had someone tell him what Venom's about instead of reading anything about Venom :patrice:

The Marvel universe has become so light? Did this nikka not see Infinity War? :what:

I'm bugging that he called the other guys dark when their former leader once publicly stated they were never dark and described what dark is.:usure:

But moving on...... can someone provide me a link or screen shot of Venom biting peoples heads off and eating brains?:frank2:

I literally googled it and nothing came up, just curious where that is coming from:frank1:

Thanks for the question! You might be surprised to hear that out of all the three major people to go by the name “Venom” (Eddie Brock, Mac Gargan, and Flash Thomspon), Eddie has the cleanest cannibalism record! Venom first ate brains in the 1996 issue Venom: The Hunger #1. Eddie was delirious after not sleeping for days and combined with the symbiote’s rising hunger, led the pair to eat a criminal’s brain, but Eddie came to his senses and vomited what he had just eaten into a dumpster right after.

This is the only incident in which the pair of Eddie and Venom had eaten or even bitten any humans (with the exception of biting the super villain Sandman). When Mac Gargan became Venom, his first brush with cannibalism was similar to Eddie’s as it was a “heat of the moment” situation where Mac devoured Steel Spider’s arm in Thunderbolts #115 (2007). Later, Mac would not resist the symbiote’s urges as Mac began to enjoy biting and even eating humans such as this panel from Siege: Spider-Man (2010).

Flash Thompson is a somewhat different story as from even his first outing as Agent Venom in The Amazing Spider-Man #654.1 (2011), Flash looses control, bites off, spits back out Flag Smasher’s arm, and replies that it doesn’t count as cannibalism. A similar situation would occur in Venom (Vol. 2) #9 (2011) where Flash looses control again, bites off, and spits out Hijacker’s head. In issue #24 (2012) Flash would make the full leap to cannibal as a demon in him causes him to devour a whole human.

In all three of these cases, the hosts were originally unwilling participates to the act of cannibalism as they were under the influence of the symbiote (and a demon in Flash’s) case. At the end of the day though, Eddie rarely used his teeth as a weapon and never completely ate a human, Mac often used his teeth to bite and devour countless amounts of people, and Flash did also occasionally use his teeth to bite but also ate a human in one incident.

I’ve seen some people question Venom and cannibalism, reblogging for the curious!
